There's a full description in todays paper of what he actually said. I sure couldn't post it on BITOG.

Mel's mouth his most lethal weapon

A stunned Hollywood debated the future of one of its biggest stars as a sheriff's watchdog launched an investigation into a possible cover-up of a leaked report that quoted Mel Gibson unleashing a tirade of anti-Semitic remarks during a drink-driving arrest.

One media expert said today that Gibson irreparably damaged his career with his "crazy" behaviour following his arrest by Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies in Malibu early on Friday.

Charges of anti-Semitism were also levelled against the actor-director with the release of his 2004 blockbuster The Passion of the ******.

"It's a nuclear disaster for him," said publicist Michael Levine, who has represented Michael Jackson and Charlton Heston, among others.

"I don't see how he can restore himself."

The entertainment website TMZ posted what it said were four pages from the original arrest report, which quoted Gibson as launching an expletive-laden "barrage of anti-Semitic remarks" after he was stopped on Pacific Coast Highway.

According to the report, in addition to threatening the arresting deputy and trying to escape, Gibson said: "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world". He then reportedly asked the officer, James Mee: "Are you a Jew?"

The report has not been made public, but the Los Angeles Times reported that it had independently verified its authenticity.

Gibson's publicist, Alan Nierob, would not elaborate beyond a nonspecific apology Gibson issued on Saturday. Sheriff's sources also declined to comment on Gibson's alleged remarks.

Studio executives, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the matter, were divided on how Gibson's behaviour would affect his career. One noted that people had short memories, including filmmakers who might want to profit from Gibson's star power.

The Office of Independent Review, a department watchdog panel, has opened an investigation into whether authorities gave Gibson preferential treatment by covering up his alleged inflammatory comments, said its chief attorney, Mike Gennaco.

"Assuming that the report was excised, then the question is: 'Was it done for a good reason within regulations?' " he said.

Gibson has filmed public service announcements for Sheriff Lee Baca's relief committee dressed in a sheriff's uniform.

"There is no cover-up," Mr Baca told the Los Angeles Times.

"Our job is not to [focus] on what he said. It's to establish his blood-alcohol level when he was driving and proceed with the case. Trying someone on rumour and innuendo is no way to run an investigation, at least one with integrity."

Gibson said in his apology that he said "despicable" things to deputies during his arrest.

"I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable," Gibson said.

Abraham H. Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, called Gibson's apology "unremorseful and insufficient".

"It's not a proper apology because it does not go to the essence of his bigotry and his anti-Semitism," he said in a statement on the organisation's website.

"We would hope that Hollywood now would realise the bigot in their midst and that they will distance themselves from this anti-Semite."

This is not the first time Gibson has faced accusations of anti-Semitism. He produced, directed and financed Passion, which some Jewish leaders said cast Jews as the killers of *****.

In a 2004 interview with ABC television's Diane Sawyer, Gibson said he was not anti-Semitic.

"To be anti-Semitic is a sin," he said.

"It's been condemned by one Papal Council after another. To be anti-Semitic is to be un-Christian, and I'm not."

Days before Passion was released, Gibson's father Hutton Gibson was quoted as saying the Holocaust was mostly "fiction". The younger Gibson has said that he will not speak against his father.

Gibson, 50, was arrested after deputies stopped his 2006 Lexus LS 430 for speeding at 2.36am on Friday.

Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said deputies clocked him doing 140 kmh in a 72 kmh zone.

A breath test indicated Gibson's blood-alcohol level was .12 per cent, Whitmore said. The legal limit in California is .08 per cent.

Gibson posted $US5000 ($6500) bail and was released hours later.

In his statement, Gibson also said he had struggled with alcoholism and had taken steps "to ensure my return to health".

Gibson won a best-director Oscar for 1995's Braveheart. He also starred in the Lethal Weapon and Mad Max films.

.12 is barely rolling. Mel must be getting crotchety. That's a pitcher of cold and a couple of shooters or so.

Now, if he'd blown a .19 or better, we'd be talking the kind of crosseyed that might merit something stupid coming out of the mouth.

Think I'd beg my attorney (and the cops) to "recalibrate" the machine or whatever.

Better shot as a ******* than as a Chihuahua . . maybe they meant .21

Much ado about nothing. Many other supposed "stars" have been hooked for drunk driving in california with is very low level of bac. Look at teh www.thesmokinggun.com for many more.

Mel is entitled to his opinions drunk or sober. I may or nor agree with them, but will defend him whether I do or not. The measure of a civilized society is its tolerance to views that do not coincide with mainstream groupthink.

But I bet ya Mel get crucified over this, for no other reason other than he is a resounding success in a world that does not tolerate success.

Exactly. Probably won't hurt his career. Looniness is part of the Holywood culture. And last time I checked..Free Speech was still permitted in this country.

Being a vocal anti-Semite in Hollywood is not a smart business move. It's going to hurt him big-time.

I'll try to word this as best I can so as not to cross the RSP line.

The part of this story that I find the most troublesome is his claim to be a religious man, yet he engages in behavior that anyone in their right mind should find shameful. For heaven's sake, Mel, straighten your act up! You're making the whole church look bad!

Matt_S, I understand your frustration, but we are all fallen and prone to sin. As long as we learn from our bad times, we can be stronger in our best times. I hope he learns and moves on. Life is bigger than what he just experienced.

Much like a motorcycle accident, the only one he 'hurt' was himself. Luckily he didn't smash his car into someone and hurt them. Time to count those blessings...

I've worked as a lawyer in the area of driving under the influence law for 25 years.

Sheriff Lee Baca said:

"There is no cover-up . . . Our job is not to [focus] on what he said. It's to establish his blood-alcohol level when he was driving and proceed with the case. Trying someone on rumour and innuendo is no way to run an investigation, at least one with integrity."

This is a misleading statement, and probably purposely so. Their job is NOT to establish blood-alcohol content. Their job is to establish whether the driver was operating the motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. The blood-alcohol level, as shown by a DUI test, is simply ONE way to do that. It is only one piece of evidence on the question whether the driver was under the influence. Another type of evidence used to establish that the driver was under the influence is the driver's manner of speaking, what he said, and his actions. If the speech is slurred and/or beligerent, there's cursing, and there's bigoted highly derogatory statements about a certain group of people, and if the driver's actions are beligerent, and if the driver admits to having been drinking, all that can and is used to show that he was under the influence. So their job IS, to use the Sheriff's words, "to focus on what he said". In fact, that's one reason why so many patrol cars now have video and sound recording equipment, so that the words and actions of the driver can be used to help convict him.

The Sheriff's statement indicates to me that a coverup is in progress.

what i find interesting is that this guy (who has enough money to buy his own private church) siccumbed to a EASILY preventable problem such as drunk driving. its not as though he cant afford a cabby. how many millions did he make off the passion?

so he didnt call a cabby so he could save a few bucks. yet he blames the worlds problems on jews?

His father is a well know J*w hater and with alcohol to remove the inhibitions, Mel proves to be a chip off the old block.

Anyone else notice his apology didn't extend to the J*ws? Mel should move to Lebanon, he will be able to come out of the PC closet and speak freely among the likeminded.
