I have a few GF-3 Motorcraft bottles here for Mom's A6, a potential oil burner. Should I return/exchange them for new ones? They were all recently purchased and have the HC/synthetic designation. Is there some overlap between bottling and new GF-4 formulas? I am leaning toward returning them.

Some places ask why you are returning it, just say I got the GF3/SL instead of the GF4/SM by mistake and my car requires SM/GF4. And there you start a conversation. The new ones are synthetic blend. Don't know if the SL/GF3 ones are synthetic blend or not. Same price but better stuff, I would get the latest and greatest. If you are leaning toward returning/exchange then go for it.

Why return them? If they worked in the car before, they'll still work in the car now. I can't see where GF-4/SM is going to "help" a potential oil burning problem much, if at all.

There certainly is no moral problem with returning them. All you are saying is that these are an old version and that you want the new version.

As long as you have your receipt there is no dishonesty involved.

Myself I'm not planning on returning any of my current stock of GF-3 lubes, but will be buying GF-4 going forward.

Aren't you the same guy raving about Delo 400 having ACEA A3?
If so, why are you using GF-3/GF-4 oils?

Agree completely John...the reference to integrity referred to the reasons some might give when returning anything.

I figure that I have an ARX rinse coming up in my lil cousin's old Coupe GT. It'll only be in the engine for 2000 miles so I'll use the GF-3/SL Motorcraft and get more new stuff for the A6.

Other than GC, I am keeping my home stock of oil as low as possible. BTW, I did not see GF-4/SM DCO in the store, just the GTX, Havoline and MC.

I don't know if pointing out an oil spec is "raving" and it somehow obligates me to use that oil. For those who care, I maintain quite a few cars at very different climates from +100f to -10f. Why would I use the same oil in all cars, all year? Driving habits, distances and service intervals can change as well as the actual oil products available on the market. I'm at a loss as to why someone would introduce this subject, of Delo and A3 to this thread. If the point is to drag up the issue of Delo meeting A3, all you have to do is look at the side of the bottle.

Anyway, GF-4 5w-30 in the V6 Audi is experimental. That engine burned SJ DCO like it was going out of style. (pun intended) It may do better on "dino" now, post ARX. The car has had only thick (A3) synth and 15w-40 Delvac (not A3

) since the DCO fiasco. This is what trial and error is all about. MC 5w-30 is 11cSt, that's a good start.

Trade up for the newest product. I just did that last week with Pennzoil. May as well get the product you want to use. You may get a funny look from the person working at the return desk, but like lpcmidst said, it's a good way to fire up a conversation.
