Pee-wee, at esso.ca go to specs on 0-30 XD3 100% syn oil. You will find this:

Compare these XD3 0-30 specs with Esso Protec dino, when you see the value, keep in mind this 0-30 XD3 is only $1.50 more per litre for a full syn.

XD3 0-30 syn oil
TBN 12.2
Pour point -48C or -57F
visc @ 100C 12.1
visc @ 40C 71

The 0-40 XD3 specs are really high.

This oil has better high temp visc than most 10-30 and 5-30 oils, I have XD3 0-30 dealership okayed at Nissan and they recomend 5-30 Esso protec dino for year round use.

If you have 4 litre change, you are talking about $6.00 difference on OCI, This XD3 is $3.71 per litre at Esso bulk stations, 5-30 Esso Superflo syn is $6.00 and is way lower on specs too, infact, superflo not much better than Protec dino.

XD-3 has very impressive numbers. I might have to pick some up for one of my next OC's.

all that said, If one were to go Dino, and want to do more frequent OC's,... Is this oil comparable to the major brands out there?

Pee-Wee,

If you decide to use Esso Protec Extra or XD-3 seek out a Superstore, or one of the other Loblaws grocery sores. Loblaws' President's Choice brand oil is re-labeled Protec Extra and XD-3. Currently, in Edmonton, all PC oil, including the XD-3, 15W-40, can be bought for $1.88/L.

If I were to use this oil as top up with Mobil1 5W30 , would there be any down-sides?

Esso is made by Mobil

Yuk, when I go to SuperStore Medicine Hat, does that mean 15-40 President Choice oil is XD3 Esso 15-40 dino oil? $1.88 is great price for that oil if it is XD3, I pay $2.79 for XD3 15-40 dino at Esso Bulk.

What is the price for XD3 0-30, 0-40 full syn oil at SuperStore, do you know? The price at Esso Bulk for 0-30 is 3.71 litre, 0-40 is 4.20, these are syn oils so that is good pricing, I hear Walmart XD3 syn oils run about 5.50 litre. I did see the XD3 15-40 dino at Walmart for same price as Esso Bulk.

PeeWee, this Esso Protec dino oil is the choice oil for my Nissan dealership, the TBN on this oil is only 7.5 compared to XD3 12.2.

If you want a dino oil with 12.2 TBN at great price then go to Esso XD3 5-30 dino oil, this oil is amazing, it only has -3C less flow rate than Superflo Esso syn oil in 5-30. This XD3 5-30 has higher visc at 100C and 40C than 5-30 superflo syn oil, and ofcourse the 30% more TBN than Esso Superflo syn oil. This XD3 5-30 dino oil is a great oil,it is far better than Esso Protec dino on shelves. I think it will be around the 2.50 mark, I am going to Esso Bulk today, I will price it out. I can give specs on Esso XD3 0-30, 0-40, 5-30 dino, 5-30 superflo.

You can mix dino with syn, I like to stay in same oil weight range in mixing, I have read in these posts not to mix synthetics though. I actually mixed esso protec dino 5-30 with Walmart tech2000 5-30 syn oil with no problem, now that I learned about XD3 syn, I regret doing that.

I no longer buy 6.00 per litre plus syn oils when I can get 12.2 TBN with -48C pour point, and better heat visc protection than most $6.00 + litre syn oils even in their 10-30 weights. 3.71 litre is unbeatable in XD3 for me.

I am going to Bulk station today to by bulk packages of XD3 for two brothers and my father for their cars, once they saw specs on this oil they too are converted to this oil. I will check out superstore though, sounds like deal, thing is Yuk, how does one know for sure P.C> is 100 % XD3?

Cyprs,

Superstore does not carry the synthetic variants of XD-3, unless something has changed in the last week I'm unaware of. I spoke with an Imperial Esso rep. who took my P.C. 15w40 production number and was able to trace it to a production run that was done at the Strathcona refinery, in Edmonton, in March. As long as the P.C. oil is in an Esso bottle ( Esso makes its own bottles) and has the same type production code on the bottle neck, than you can feel confident you have Esso Extra or XD-3 oil.

Thanks Yuk, also, if P.C. oil is actually Esso XD3 15-40 there is another check one can do. Esso's trademark is always to have three stars on base or very bottom of bottle, does your P.C. labled bottle have these 3 stars, if so, I know where I will probably get my summer oil for 1.88.

thanks,
Cyprs
