I was looking for Mobil1 Truck and SUV 5w40 for my freshly rebuilt 1979 AMC 360, and want to get some in Canada...

And the Mobil site is under Esso.. Can I assume that Esso synthetics are made by Mobil?

Esso is a division of ExxonMobil.

Before buying the 5W-40 T&S you may want to do a little research on the Esso XD-3 0W-30 and 0W-40 HDEO.
They are considered some of the best buys on the market. Unfotunately they are not available in the US.

Walmart is now beginning to sell the Esso synthetics, many have spotted the 0w30 synthetic there, and my local one just got in their 0w40 synthetic recently too.

You can also look up your local Esso distributor in town and get it from them. They can also sell you Delvac 1 5w40, which is very similar if not identical to Mobil 1 5w40 Truck and SUV.

Lots of people have reported that they can still buy it in smaller quantities from their local Esso dealer, such as buying a single case of 12 liter bottles or a couple of 4L jugs.

Cool, I gave them a call, spoke to a nice lady... You have to buy minimum a case. On hand they had some synthetic Delvac 15w40 at 7.03$ plus tax per quart at 12 quarts per case. Then they had the synthetic 0w40 in 4L jugs at 4 jugs a case at 4.21$ per litre for 77.46 for a 16 litre case. I'd say that's pretty good..

Now, I'm running dino Valvoline 10w30, it was my first oil since the rebuild. These AMC engines are bad for rear main seal leakage, and I have a little leak right now. My experience has been that I never could run anything under dino 15w40 before for this reason. I tried semin synth 10w30 and it leaked before the rebuild. If what I understand is correct, the 0w40 would be my choice. The better cold crank ability with a weight that will keep the oil inside the seal..

That rules out me buying the oil at a bulk dealer, 70 bucks for oil is a bit much for me. I guess I'll pick up a jug of the 0w40 from Walmart then take a trip to Acklands-Grainger for a Baldwin filter.

See, in my case it's not bad.. I got a bypass filter and an oil cooler.. I require 8 litres instead of my usual 5.. so 16 litres is 2 oil changes.. I should have oil for 2 years.. I probably drive 2000Km a year with the jeep... I still want the best for my engine, all that crawling in the woods builds up alot of heat.. that's where synthetic should help.. And I just spoke to my buddy, and he wants half of it.. lol..

Yeah, go to Esso bulk station, $1.50 + saving per litre there. I understand that Mobil has taken over Esso synthetic oil production, = good oil.

I was just reading the facts on their XD-3 synthetics 0w30 and 0w40 are PAO basestocks.. not good for me.. since they shrink seals.. crap.. I'll check what else...

What is the basestock in the Delvac 5w40 synthetic?

I highly doubt they are 100% PAO though. They'll mix in some esters too in order to avoid seal shrinkage.

You won't find modern oils shrinking your seals, they simply do not formulate them this way at all, they know better now than they did when synthetics first came out a few decades ago.

Cool, then I might just use the 0W40 if I can't find the 5W40... There's just so much little things.. Although I barely make any mileage, what the longest time before an oil change?? one year, two years? I run a motorguard and change my filters every month or two... (dirty fourwheeling)
