Anyone using any specific combination of oil and filter in there Envoy or Trailblazer that would reduce the startup knock?

I switched from castrol synthetic 5w-30 w/OEM acdelco filter to M206 w/Mobil1 5w-30, noticed a slight decrease. 3k OCI

Startup knock? Is this a V8 model, or does the I6 have the piston slap issues as well?

It's the I6, I don't think it has the piston slap issue, it more sounds like noisey lifters. I've read that the choice of oil filters would help with this problem. I am running AutoRx cleaning phase right now to see if it's sludge. I just got the truck in Jan 2005.

Start up noise is usually assosiated with a bad ADBV. What filter brand are you using? If it's toward the end of your OCI, then I'd recomend a filter with a silicone ADBV, like the Pure one.

The noise is always there at statup and throughout the OCI, until the engine gets to normal temp then it's gone. Presently I am using the Mobil M206 filter with M1 synthetic 5w-30.

M1 oil filter & oil with 3k mile OCI? Kinda wasteful isn't it?

I know it's short, but I just got the car less than four month now and wanted to get the correct combination and stick with it. That's why I joined this forum to see if anyone had good experiences with their envoy. If I get a good lead I'll use it on the next OC.

Does ACdelco PF61 comes with a silicone ADBV?

That may be your ticket to no start up noise because I believe that one does not have a ADBV.... it's sister the (PF-59) has one.

Two questions:
1)Which one (59 or 61) was the original factory issue?

2)Does your Envoy engine have a stand-up/vertical filter set-up?... perfect for the non-ADBV AC-61

I am not sure which one was factory issued, I just went to the acdelco.com site and lookup the envoy. The filter is in a vertical position where you have to reach from under.

I am kinda confused now, do I need the ADBV on the filter to get rid of the noise or not?

I have been using a PF59 in wifes Trailblazer. Along with 2 OCI of M1 5-30 and now some Kendall GT-1 Syn Blend 5-30. I think the M1 was quieter however the Kendall feels smoother. I do not drive it often so its hard for me to judge. Next will be the Havoline Syn from AZ clearence.

Mike,
Pick up an oil filter at the dealership. It that helps, you now have something to compare other filters to. If things stay the same, you know it isn't a filter problem.

Play frisbee with that K&N filter and get an ACDelco air filter. Better filtration and equal or better air flow.

Run that Mobil 1 oil for the full oil life monitor indication. That OLM indicator is good for conventional oil, and the Mobil 1 is likely good for twice as long.

Mike,

you have piston slap and NO oil will fix it.

It is part of the nature of that year.

Your oil filter is the PF61 and don't change it to any other.

The noise is not from the lifters, it is from the piston rings not seating on the cylinder wall until the engine warms up and they expand and properly seat.

Leave the truck alone and change your Mobil 1 oil every 6000 miles.

You do not need any ADBV with your filter placement. Buy the non-ADBV AC Delco PF-61. Blazer's Mobil recommendation is sound. The only thing I might add is a bottle of Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment at your next OCI & two ounces of Lube Control (one time only).

Buy Lube Control Right Here

Your noise will be worse with Mobil 1. My 2002 Suburban had the noise and with Mobil 1 it was much worse.

Pennzoil or Havoline Dino made it where I could at least tolerate it.

You want an ADBV. Filter orientation does not matter. An ADBV helps keep more oil in your system, then without one. Not having an ADBV will make it worse.

I'd suggest switch to another filter brand like Purolator and if that doesn't work try switching oils.

Not necessary Keith.... this filter set-up on Mike's Envoy and my Colorado needs no ADBV.... so the vehicle comes from the factory without one.

I just changed a AC Delco PF-61 yesterday. Halfway thru spinning it off, oil spill was plentiful & when it came off, it was full of oil.

Use the filter the manufacturer prescribes... no ADBV necessary.

There is oil in the filter, but not in the lines above the filter. An ADBV can keep the oil in the lines too. Every filter I've seen for the 4.2 has an ADBV.

Keith

This set-up is not like my 4.3 S-10 ... filter being a foot away from the engine. Even if it was... I don't believe it matters. The main reason ADBVs are needed is because of their horizontal-like direction on most. What vehicle will drain the oil out of a non-ADBV vertical filter after shutting the engine off? I know of no such animal.

My brother has an 02 Trailblazer, same I6 engine as the Envoy. The engine has that knock on startup, sounds like the piston slap off my GM 3.4L V6. It takes a few minutes of driving to go away and doesn't sound too friendly when it hits the highway cold. The noise is louder since we have changed to M1 5W-30. It has the Purolator Premium Plus that is specced for this engine, which is supposed to have a good flow rate according to this forum.

The filter is positioned so that the top of the filter is where the opening is, so the filter can't drain.
