Foster Yeoman brought over the first EMDs in 1985-86. The British government wouldn't allow purchasing non-British made engines, but a private outfit could.

British Rail thought the Foster Yeoman purchase was a great idea, somebody else could take the risk of bringing over something different.

I think the Class 66 engines are all EMDs.
 
Interesting tidbit I haven't heard anyone mention is that diesel-electric locomotives are 2-cycle engines. Guess that doesn't affect the oil spec, other than the fact that the cylinders are firing on every rev, instead of every other rev, like a 4-cycle.

Someone claimed that EE built jet engines - I don't think they build jet engines these days...may have in the past.

The EE Lightning is one of my favorite jet fighters of all time...
