It is the Cst at 100c. It should be 9.0-12.5 for 30w and 12.5-14.5 for 40w. This is the vs at that temp only. Any chnage in temp up or down will change the viscosity.

Actually the specs are 9.3 to 12.5 for 30wt and 12.5 to 16.3 for 40wt.

20wt is 5.6 to 9.3, 50wt is 16.3 to 21.9

Look for cSt@ 100c; this is the oils viscosity at operating temperature.

The range for a 30 weight oil is 9.3 to 12.4. For example, M1 10W30 is listed as 10, which as you can see, is on the thin side of the allowable range. Pennzoil HM 10W30 is 12 cSt@ 100c, on the thick side of the allowable range.

40 weight oils must be between 12.5 and 16.3 cSt.

anyone know right off what 0w30 or 5w30 is closest to a 20 wgt??

Mobil 1 0w30 is around 10cst, so it's probably one of the thinnest 0w30s out there. Their 5w30 also was 10cst, but some of the most recent analysis results have suggested they might have thickened it up closer to 11cst now.

Castrol Syntec 5w30 is 9.7cst at 100c.

thanks for the info....i have the ford 5.4L and dont really wanna use a 0w20 or 5w20....would the mobil 1 0w30 be my best choice?

Mobil 1 0w30 isn't exactly highly regarded on here, not necessarily because it isn't good, but I think just simply because there are better 0w30s available, such as German Castrol Syntec 0w30 or Amsoil 0w30.

If I owned a car that called for 5w20, and I was forced to choose either Mobil 1 0w20 or Mobil 1 0w30, I'd probably go with their 0w20, it looks to have a better additive package, and their 0w30 will most likely thin out to a 20wt anyways, while their 0w20 should hold it's viscosity well.

I don't have the answer but wanted to say that my wifes Honda CRV also calls for the 5w20. I've got the Mobil-1 0w30 in it now but I may settle in with the Mobil-1 5w30 after my next oil change....

Dittos...
M1 0w30 isn't a bad choice, but I would choose Amsoil's 0w-30 over M1 as it's a more robust choice.

I'm not sure about Motul, but the virgin sample of GC 0w30 I sent in came back with a viscosity of 12.2cst at 100c.

gc 0w30 is on the heavy side of a 30 wgt while the 5w30 is on the light side.....hummm...any ideas where i could get motul's cst@100c

That's because the Syntec 0w30 is made in Germany and the 5w30 is made in USA and they are totally different oils, not similar by any stretch of the imagination. The 0w30 is a true synthetic while the 5w30 uses a group 3 base oil.

As far as finding out the specs on Motul 0w30, someone on here tried emailing them to get those specs but was only sent the data for their 0w40 and 5w40. Hopefully someone else on here might know the specs on their 0w30?
