I have a 1998 toyota tacoma pickup with the 4 cylinder engine (2RZ-FE). Owners manual states the oil capacity as 5.8 quarts. I changed oil & filter for the first time today since buying it used. I put in 5 quarts because I didn't want to overfill it. After starting it to check for leaks and shuting it down I checked the oil level after letting it sit for an hour. When I pulled the dip stick it was right on the full mark.
Does anyone know if this is the right amount of oil for this engine?
I did check a Chiltons manual, and it states the oil capacity as 5.1 quarts.

I have a 99 Tacoma,small 4 Cyl.
It takes 5.8 Qts with filter change.
That's what the Toyota Mannul states
and I have had no problum with that.
Good Luck with your Taco.......

Owner's Manuals sometimes are incorrect, the one supplied with my Subaru is incorrect per the customer service rep I spoke with at Subaru. I'd suggest talking to customer service and see what they say.

There are engine designs that have more oil capacity than you can drain and refill. Perhaps the manual writer inserted the actual dry capacity, whereas Chiltons wrote in the drain and refill number.

My Ferrari F355 has a 10 Qt capacity, but unless I disconnect several big oil hoses, I can't get more than 9.25 Qts into the thing.

I drained the oil with the truck setting level. I pulled the drain plug and went to mow the yard. Took about 1 hour and a 1/2. Oil was drained when it was hot. I did not move the truck after the oil change was complete. Just ran it for about 10 minutes for a good leak check and to warm the oil up.

Perhaps you did not remove all the old oil.

Did you remove hot oil or cold oil?
Was the nose of your Toyota on a down-slope?

After changing the oil & starting the Toyota, did you move it? When you checked the new oil level, was the vehicle on an up-slope?

Basically, the vehicle should be relatively level just before changing & level checking. I always raise my front-end when changing oil in the direction of the oil pan bolt. If it's rear, I like to raise it from the nose. If it's on the driver-side of the pan (my Colorado), I'll raise the passenger side more-so.
Just something to consider!

Turns out that the Chilton's manual is correct.
My owners manual states 5.0 quarts without a filter. Then says 5.8 quarts with a filter. The difference in 5.0 quarts and 5.8 quarts is 25.6 ounces. I measured the ounces that it took to fill the used filter after it was completely drained and it only took 6 ounces. So my guess is the Chilton's manual is correct. There is a 3RZ-FE engine (4 cylinder) that's installed in a T100 that takes 5.8 quarts.

By the way W.T. MCGLYNN, Does your oil dipstick read exactly full when installing 5.8 quarts?
Thanks for your comments.
