ECU compatibility?

Somewhat general question, but is it possible to run 1.2 Ecu on a 1.4 petrol engine without remap? Did some research but can't find anything useful, some say it's possible, some no way. Car is mpi, but it's without camshaft sensor, and difference in engines is in stroke.

If the ECU uses a temperature and absolute pressure sensor, then it is not possible without an ECU reprogramming.

On the other hand if both ECU's use a mass airflow sensor, then possibly it can work, assuming you can adjust or translate the signal from 1.2 to 1.4. And also assuming that the ECU pinout is the same, if you are going to rewire the ECU, better to put in an
aftermarket ECU.
