Has anyone looked at the oiling system on the GM Ecotech 2.0, 2.2, and 2.4? The filter is a cartridge type installed inside the block at the opposite end of the engine from the oil pump. It seems like this would be the place to put a bypass type filter system.

I'm asking if it's system actually is a bypass as it comes from the factory. That seems strange to me that it would be a full flow system and have the filter so far from the pump. Have they realised the benefits of a bypass system, and feel that there is no need for a full flow?

Hello Larkbill,

Looks a like the SAAB 9-3 SS 2.0 engine (part of GM) Has an aluminium filterhousing that can be opened from above. And yes the filter is mounted at the opposite side of the oilpump.
Unfortunately this still is a full-flow filter.

In the cap there is an overpressure relief valve you won't see with a bypass.

If it were a bypass, you would still have a full-flow filter mounted somewhere.

They use filter cartridges in many new engines now because they are more environment friendly, less oil remains in the filter. Less waste as the overpressure valve, backflow valve and housing are not discarded.

In theory these filter cartidges should costs less !

Exactly, in theory but most of the time they are more expensive than the tin can ones!!! What is up with that???

Ok - so, bypass won't work on an Ecotec with cartridge filter?

I love it. The automotive industry has gone from cartridge filters to spin on filters and back again. I bet the real motivation for cartridge filters now is that there is no competition by aftermarket so you have to buy the manufacturers filter and they make more $. That's why they aren't cheaper like it seems they should be.

Yep, I don't know about the rest of you with the Ecotec's filters but they are hard to find. Usually sold out at Wal-Mart, AutoZone wants $5 for the STP one. The only place I see Wix filters for my car is through Amsoil. Pepboys had a few Purolator filters for my car but I haven't seen them for over a year now.

Guess it's because they are a bit new.
ACDELCO lists a huge 63 cars (all GM) that use this particular PF456G (or GM/SAAB part no 12579143).

In Europe we have Hengst filters from Germany and Purflux from France, all comaptible.

Haven't seen these in real life but it does look they do have more filter area ?
But all newer engines use longer OCI, so I guess the filtration has not been improved, only the capacity of dirt it can hold !
