These two filters seem to get ragged on the most here, not without good reason though sometimes. Just out of curiousity, if you only had the two to pick from, which one would you use on your car?

The problem with OCOD is the price. I would use it all day long over an ECore. Some on here have had blow outs with the e-scares.

For me it would depend on the E-core available, I think I would rather have an ACDelco or actual Champ E-core than an EG. If was down to an less expensive rebrand I'd probably just take which ever was cheaper as I don't really think either is going to kill my car.

How is efficiency better in the E-core? What E-core? It depends on size, who built it. This is the type of stuff that runs through BITOG and scares people for no reason. There is really nothing that is going to kill your car from either.

Every brand of filter can have its defects here and there.

OCOD. Easy. Acura, Subaru, Honda all use OCOD built variations to good effect as OEM branded service part. I prefer Champion non-ecore over OCOD, though. OCOD still uses steel perf'd centertube - the backbone of any spin on canister filter assy. paper endcaps are not an issue. My Honda spec OCOD uses a silicone rubber ADBV which I feel is very critical, esp in winter/cold use.

+1

The Honda-branded filter for my wife's Ody is basically an OCOD (would the Honda branding make it a Blue Can Of Death?).

With that filter, I'd run whatever quality dino was on sale (Chevron from Costco right now) for a 5k OCI.

My answer would be NEITHER! Get a Puro Classic FAR or go to Pep Boys and get a ProLine-I cleaned out every PB in Cincy of PPL30288s for my 7.3 IDI-at only $3.10 each-less than 1/3 the cost of the OCOD for that engine!

Since i had some of each, I'm actually running a little test of OCOD vs STP ecore on my Granada. I'm using the same brand/type of oil for each under the same driving conditions. Waiting for the Fram results and using the ecore now.
While I believe the Fram may be built better and safer than the ecore, I'm curious to see if the ecore actually filters better.

I honestly don't remember, the test numbers and stuff don't stick in my head. Maybe somebody can fill this in.

In fact, when I needed filters for my Saturn ION I bought Proline, I got fine filters that were made in the USA!

I have used many E-core and Fram Extra Guard. They both did it's job with no problems. Kepp in mind ANY brand of filters can have failures. As far as picking one, I would say pick whatever is cheaper and can be easier to get.

I was just curious as to what you guys would pick between the two. I used to run Motorcrafts on all my stuff, sometimes Pureones if I had the extra cash, but they don't make a Motorcraft for my Scion so I've actually been running the FRAM Tough Guard on mine since I buy my oil at Walmart and thats what I feel is the best filter they have for the money besides Motorcrafts. I change oil every 5,000miles so I didn't really wanna spend the extra money the Extended Gaurd. I was kinda curious if the Supertech filters would be a better alternative, but maybe I'll just stick with the TG.

If your store sells the Pure Ones, they probably sell the Purolator Classics. The Classic would be my choice, followed by Tough Guard - then an Ecore (black caged) Supertech
