i have all 3 ports on my monitor and pc. I know vga is the oldest,so which of the other 2 should i use for better picture? Thanks.

HDMI is the best, but it has some things to pay attention to that the others do not. The most important is that HDMI is a two-way communication spec, and the monitor and signal source have a fairly long and meaninful conversation before anything gets put on the screen. This means that sometimes a monitor will fail to communicate properly with whatever it's hooked up to, and you'll get nothing on the screen. My Sony TV and my satelite box used to spend five minutes negotiating before I got a picture and sound over HDMI. I switched to using a high definition video cable set, and the picture comes up now in seconds. So, HDMI is "the best" but do your research before you spend a bunch of money on expensive cables. You might find one of the other methods is actually better for your situation.

VGA is analog only. Some of the super high resolutions compete with the digital standards. DVI, with the correct connector can carry both analog and digital video. DVI to HDMI adapters exist for digital only (I think). HDMI is becoming predominant simply because it's cheaper (no analog) and is more compact. The primary reason DVI exists is compatibility to existing VGA analog interfaces on computer monitors.

Both DVI and HDMI should be comparable in terms of image quality and better than VGA. Main difference between DVI and HDMI is that DVI only sends video information while HDMI can be used to send both video as well as audio to your monitor.

All 3 standards carry an interface to talk compatibility with monitors.

HDMI is the latest & greatest, main advantage is it can travel audio as well. DVI quality seemed to look identical to me, however the cable was of course thick and was a pain to maneuver around. there's always gonna be VGA..

+1 Actually the latest and greatest for monitors is DisplayPort.

PC to monitor? DVI-D. Interestingly, DVI and HDMI carry exactly the same format. HDMI is capable of carrying audio as well. BUT, DVI is capable of carrying higher resolutions than HDMI is. But yes, the best modern monitor connection is displayport, if your monitor and computer have it.

Yeah, that's what my laptop has, but my monitor doesn't. I had to use a DP-to-DVI adapter to make it work.

Does DVI support Digital Rights Management (DRM)? HDMI does, and these days for some devices (like my iPhone) that's the difference between being able to play an HD movie on a big screen monitor, or being forced to play it on the postage stamp screen.

Im fairly certain it does. I know Ive seen somewhere that my screen is locked and DRM videos will play. Though, it wont do it over a HDMI to DVI converter. I hooked up my Xbox to it once via one of those and it complained it couldnt lock the screen or whatever.
