I'm not a nervous flyer but all the sputtering and popping wouldn't inspire a lot of confidence. Is that how they're supposed to behave?

Yes, thats normal for a supercharged engine with short exhaust stacks. They sputter because the plugs will missfire and foul when running too long at low power settings. They would burn 120-150 octaine leaded fuel, and where made to run at a steady speed. But the "merlin" was a very dependable engine for its time, they even used them on airliners.

Was at an airshow the other week where a Dakota was doing joy flights.

It sounded very "poppy" until it was on the runway, and loaded up.

Awesome when loaded.

Mudgee...would have liked to be at Temora this weekend, but travelling with a 2 and 4 year old makes Temora a bigger than 1 day trip.
