This is my kid's 07 yaris with about 70,000 miles. This is a new noise, not too load but clearly audible (with radio off). Not when you apply brakes, but when you release them. Clearly in the rear. Recently I checked the front disk brakes and the pads had only 50% wear (unknown mileage). The brakes work fine otherwise.

I never enjoyed working on drum brakes (I did it only twice that I remember, never on this car), are they out of adjustment or something more serious?
Thanks!

its' the backing plate. trust me, I know this stuff. My 97 Escort did the same thing.

The shoes are rubbing up against it when you release the brake pedal. To confirm this, stop the car and apply the parking brake, while the brake pedal is applied, release the foot pedal, you should not hear any squeaking.

My 07 Focus does the same thing. I've been putting it off for a while now. Maybe next oil change I'll get to it

TO fix, remove the drum and slather some anti-seize compound to the back of the shoes where they contact the plate. Should fix the problem for at least 6-12 months.

Probably just the metal portion of the brake shoes rubbing on the raised spots on the backing plates. My Honda Accord used to do the same thing. Occasionally, you have to put a little high temp grease on those friction points.

Don't use a nickel/copper anti seize. Use a brake grease. I like the Motorcraft XG3A but I'm sure there are many other options available.

My dyslexia is acting up again. I made a correction to the spelling in the title as soon as I realized it. All the replies got the original spelling, LOL.

I thought "squicky" was a great combination of squeaky and sticky!

I would deffinately pull the drums and inspect them. Maybe a broken spring for something easy to replace. Anytime I have had squeeky drum brakes, when I inspected them, I found the culprit and fixed it promptly!
