I remeber as a kid, we had a nieghbour 2 doors down that had a 1979/1980 Pontiac Sunbird 4-cylinder sedan.

It was the husbands daily work car, and he had a heck of a time getting it going - it would start, and then stall, at least 3-4 times before he could get it going.

It was a stick, and he used to push in the clutch while starting, and the car would roll off the driveway while trying to start it, and he could never get it going until it was on the street!

Usually fired on the third or fourth turn in sub-zero weather...first or second in warm weather or with a warm engine. The sum total of very-cold-weather prep it got was 5w30 engine oil (instead of 15w40) and a piece of heavy cardboard or plastic blocking half the radiator.

My '84 RX-7 had a hand operated choke.
Pull choke out, pump gas once, turn engine over what seemed like 20 or 30 revolutions...hard to tell on a rotary, and it would start. If you forgot to disengage the choke it would do it by itself. The little knob would pop back into the dash after a short amount of time. It had a tank that injected antifreeze into the intake at subfreezing temperatures but I never had to top that off so it was a minute amount or mine didn't work.

The funny thing is how many clients I have that still pump the gas like crazy on their fuel injected engines.

One lady in particular was angry that I had "damaged" her Infiniti EX35 by not "pressing the gas" before I pushed the start button.

I have a 2008 HHR which is a Cobalt/G5 with different skin. It was one year old when I bought it,and it was $10k with 19k on the clock. I have had very few problems at all with it. The struts bumping in cold weather is the biggest problem. They should've been replaced under warranty, and I wish I would've pushed the issue.

I bought my HHR a daily driver. I take good care of it,but if it gets dirty inside and out it's no biggie. It has ice cold air, gets up to 40 MPG,and it will run 80 all day long without a hiccup. As a matter of fact,I have made 3 3000-plus mile vacation trips in it. It has 50k miles on it now,and it hasn't used a drop of oil. It doesn't like hills very well, but I believe it's the fault of the transmission programming.

Some may call the interior plain, but it's perfect for me. I work for a roofing manufacturer, and if I get asphalt in the car it wipes right off the plastic. This car literally flies under the radar! The cops don't bother me at all!
