Gears. Transmission.

More gears means it doesn't need to be in a lower gear as long to do the same amount of work. Like if I'm accelerating at 5mph per second, the ZF8 might allow my engine to never exceed 2500rpm, whereas the older 545RFE/65RFE might require it to spin at 3000rpm to accomplish the same thing.

increase in the number of Forward gears in automatic transmissions (from say 4 to 10) contributed to increased efficiency. so all who answered similarly were correct.

This allows the engine to be operated nearer its peak efficiency more of the time.

Because of the AT's increased efficiency through the years, manual transmission market share has dropped from 35% in 1980 to 1.6% in 2018, according to the report.

Thanks to all who participated.

Good catch on the typo Burt and I corrected the sentence to read:

Even as engine horsepower verses displacement have increased, fuel consumption has decreased.
