Hey all. 1991 Acclaim 2.5L 3 speed, 124,000 miles. As you all know, I have just replaced the timng belt.
Well, since then, the alternator belt has been a little twisted on the one edge, and I did not know why, as the A/C bracket seems to have no play, so the alternator cannot physically move.
So, I gave it a day, and lost an alternator belt. So, I had the old one, in useable shape, and replaced it. At this point, I saw that there was a nut missing on a little bracket in front and below the alternator. I replace it, and get it all tightened, but the belt still seems a little off. I figure that it will never be perfect, and go on.
The next day, I give it its first 30 mile interstate drive with a good amount of flooring it. Runs smooth, but at a few points near the end, there is an little odd squeak, but it stops quickly.
I get home, and check the belts. The alternator belt has started to lose one of the ribs. But, it still works.
At this point, I know that there is something that needs to be fixed, but I do not know what. I need to get it fixed, as I do not want to keep killing belts so fast. I searched the site, and found nothing. Also, what is the best brand of replacement belt, so that when I have this problem fixed, I can have a good belt on it? I used a Goodyear Gatorback from Autozone for the timing belt. The Assistant Manager there, a good friend, suggested that the Gatorback was a quieter belt.
