I know there are specialty tools that cut open oil filters but I've heard of people cutting them open with a dremel. Is it ok to use the dremel even though it will throw metal shavings on the filter media? During the inspection process I'll probably think the shavings are from the engine and not the dremel. LOL

If you really are looking at the media for debris that was from the engine, then using a real oil filter cutting tool is the best way to go. Using a dermal or hacksaw or something besides a real cutter is OK if you just want to see if the media is intact, etc.

A dremel tool with a cut-off wheel is my weapon of choice. I cut as close to the crimp where the baseplate attaches to the can as I possibly can get, and that way any shavings that get flung inside wind up between the media end-cap and the baseplate. The face of the media stays very clean that way.

I just bought a dremel deluxe parts kit and I think it has these newer cutting tools. I'll be slicing open my last orange death can on the next oil change, def. going back to wix.

I use an oscillating multi-purpose tool for cutting open mine (use a metal blade.)

Best $25 I ever spent. Cuts filters open with ease and doesn't leave too much spent metal shavings everywhere.
