Rant warning!
Every week I wash my car and notice a new nick, scratch, or scuff on the car. It's upsetting every week! Not saying I wouldn't be upset if it happened to a 20k forte but when it happens to a 30+k charger it is even more irritating and flat out me off. I always park far away from people when possible but none the less today I noticed a door ding/scuff on the passenger side door. It isn't worth it to have a really nice car just to have it get beat up on a weekly basis. From now on no more performance/muscle/sports/pseudo-sports cars as daily drivers for me. Those will be left as summer weekend warrior garage queens. Nice economy cars for daily drivers from now on. I.e Focus, Cruze, Forte, 3 or 6, etc.

Hate that!!

Buy a Saturn like I did. Dent resistant plastic body panels & a great gas saver!

I have moved on to purchasing 4-5 year old decent used vehicles. I don't get bent out of shape with damage as they typically have a little here and there.

Even an inexpensive new car under 5 years would bother me if it had damage.

I have no such problems, besides when they did an unannounced construction project at the airport and put a tarp over my car.

Must be your workplace or the type of people around where you work. It is doable... I have 30 year old cars without a dent or scratch.

I wouldnt want a beater that actually looks like it was beat.

Yet even more care may be necessary. No big deal when you get used to it.

Good luck!

fixed.

and that only covers dings anyway. I've had a '93 coupe, a L200 and a VUE, all had scratches in the plastic panels. I see plenty of saturns w/ cracked panels too, that doesn't happen w/ steel

Imagine how much worse you might feel had you purchased a really expensive German or Italian speaking vehicle?
I feel your pain, though.
Since most retail establishments have parking lots sized for the day after Thanksgiving or 12/24, you can usually find a space way out in the middle of nowhere, and your car is usually safe.
Still, it is always irritating to discover a new door ding or a fresh scrape on a bumper.
All I can tell you is that cars are made to drive and use, and some minor damage inflicted by careless and disrespectful people seems to be a part of the deal.
It may also be that a flashy car attracts some semi-intentional damage, especially in an economy where so many have suffered privation, even if often self-inflicted.
Drive what you like, and get to know a PDR guy.
It would be a shame to have to drive a car you don't really like simply due to the foolishness of others.

Fact is people today have far less consideration than days of old. I've waited for my girlfriend to go into a store while I waited in the parking lot. I see at least one or two people almost every trip just open up the car door and let it rest on another persons car. Mostly females...always in a psycho hurry or have some kid in tow that gives them an excuse to be inconsiderate. I had some 10 year old kid open his door right onto my car one time. I rolled my window down and asked him in a stern voice to PLEASE not bang my car with his door. His mother gave me a VERY angry look like I was attacking her kid.
Gotta love people.

Absolutely, and parking is nonexistant.

Another point of view:

Enjoy your car while it is new. Keep it a long time. Understand that it will deteriorate.

I prefer to drive what I like and commute/shop in it. I can't stand driving beaters, while the nice "fun to drive" car sits home.

I prefer convertibles. Driving one daily can be taxing. However, when that nice day, with proper conditions is there.... I'm not stuck in an 88 Escort with broken air conditioning.

My problem is that with only 3/4's of a mile of gravel to my house I get tons (hundreds) of little nicks in the paint behind the wheel wells. Big mud flaps help but they are so ugly. We still usually by new what we want/can afford and just live with the depreciation. Hate to see it though.

How about the guy who parks inbetween to parrallel parked vehicles and intentionally bumps both cars to see how much room her has. I go nuts. They do it like its ok!

+1. I do need a decent vehicle for my trips. I buy a middle of the road vehicle (08 Subaru-new). I keep it clean but don't worry about polishing etc. I just keep it mechanically perfect.

Life is too short to pay any attention to cars for me.

Thanks!

Saturn SL-1 & SL-2 or even the SC 1&2 (Super Coupe). Love 'em.

I had a brand new pearl white Caddy a few years ago and the poor car was a target for every idiot that liked to throw their door open.
Even when i parked it way down the lot at the store away from any other cars some idiot in a 79 AMC rust bucket would park right next to me within inches of my door and ding it or someone let a shopping cart go from way up the lot aimed right at it. Within 6 mo i had 2K worth of body damage from parking lots.

Its deliberate no doubt about it.
