Today, 158 years ago, the Battle of Gettysburg was in its second day. Names like Devils Den, the Peach Orchard and Little Round Top were made famous. The battle culminated on July 3 with what is known as Pickett's Charge but is probably better called Longstreet's Assault. On July 4, the very next day, the Confederate city of Vicksburg surrendered to Union forces under General U.S. Grant. These are just a few of the battles fought from 1861 to 1865.

In 1986 or so, a group of conservationists realized how fast Civil War battlefield land was starting to be eaten up by developers and the formed what is today known as the American Battlefield Trust. It has preserved about 53,000 acres of battlefield land, both from the Civil and Revolutionary Wars. I have been a donor since 1987 and find that this is a great way to leave behind a legacy of preservation. The trust receives the highest ratings as a charitable group as it makes quite excellent use of donated funds to buy land.

If you feel likewise as we enter the Fourth of July weekend, please go the site www.battlefields.org where you can make an online donation. Better yet, become a member and join thousands of others who are working to preserve our heritage.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Just was at Gettysburg. It’s well preserved, but I can see how other places, especially in VA and other states near cities could have issues.
