Does this drive you nuts ?

Ever see the movie idiocracy? It definitely bothers me that people are this dumb. I saw a lady just the other day, left here car running while she went into the gas station, not even cold out. I'm not sure what they think they are gaining? I do know that some people don't realize they don't need to have the engine running to listen to the radio.

I guess gas prices haven't become high enough for people to care or the health cost of having toxic pollution in city air become relevant enough (even though the problems are well documented and studied on) to make it an issue that trumps one's freedom to indulge without thought.

Ford has finally fixed the jump into gear problem? I was never completely comfortable the one place where I worked with all the Fords setting right out front idling away.

My car uses about 1L of gas per hour to idle, when no lights or accessories are on. That's about one cent per minute, in US units. How much does it cost to do a start, in wear on the starter, battery, and lock cylinder?

Combusting one gallon gas produces 20 pounds CO2.

What's your take on this ? ;- )

True story. You can Google it if you wish.
Last summer, Al Gore gave a big speech to a crowded auditorium about how we need to cut out our carbon use. I'm not sure how much the cost per plate was, but as you know, Al does not speak for free, so I'm sure it wasn't Happy Meal prices. A TV camera crew went out in back of the building and went up to Al's limos. Yes, there were two of them. Both of them were idling. They went up and tapped the microphone on the window. The driver lowered the window and they asked him why his limo was idling. He did not reply and raised the window. It turned out that Al needed to have the interior of his limo cool when his speech was done. The other limo was for his wife and immediate family. They needed their limo cool also. That way they can exit quickly into a cool interior.

Anyway, I guess if Mr. Gore can idle his limo as much as he wants, everybody else is using him as their role model.

at the wawa (like 7-11 if you're not from PA) they have signs outside now saying no idling zone. I believe it references a PA law.
I've only idled my car in the winter if I'm afraid it won't start again (a very real possiblility w/ some of the cars I've owned).
when I was driving to LA from VA to get married 14 yrs ago, it was february and the starter in my '85 golf started acting up. so, to make sure I wasn't late for my wedding, I didn't turn the car off for like 20 hrs straight at least.
I hated that car. but I still have my wife, thank goodness.

"Our"? I think another member would call that a social notion ..or a socialist notion.

What's this we "stuff", pale face?

It's nobody's business unless it's an unsafe condition or you're paying for their gas.

Just because some people have bought into AGW doesn't mean everybody else has to at the point of a wagging finger.

If they want to be idiots, okay . . . but it contributes to driving down the supply of fuel, thus driving up the demand and the price. Maybe not tomorrow, but eventually.

I'd be more worried about a spark setting off the gas of somebody idling next to me at the pump. Fireballs consume everything, not just the people who start them.

In a few cities near my there are anti-idling by-laws, 1 or 2 minute max. I can't say I've heard of anyone getting fined yet but I know a few people that have informed parents waiting at school for their kids that their car is running.

I'm in favour of it, air pollution is no joke in my area, we are downwind of the Ohio valley and smog days are no fun even with my relatively healthy lungs. We don't need more local pollution to add to what's blown in.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned this yet: Not only is idling unnecessary and wasteful, it makes your car incredibly easy to steal!! This doesn't really apply to people sitting in their idling cars, mostly the people who leave their cars idling unattended. There have been many cases where cars have been stolen this way.

I was in a gas station once and two guys pull in in a pickup, one gets out and jumps in back to rearrange the load, has a lit cigarette in his mouth. The other starts pumping the gas. I told the cashier and she yelled at him through the speakers to put it out. I was only interested in self preservation. If the guy want's to blow himself up, that' his business, but not while I am around.

would think long idling would harm your engine with possible overheating and depletion of oil . That's why we prefer to buy new . We've seen car dealerships leave new / used cars running for over 1/2 an hour to warm up car for customer and to help melt the snow on it . They also will drive their vehciles to another location for a big sale , such as a plaza or mall . To me that's a waste and extra mileage . Wonder if these long periods of idling could be harmful to the break-in period of a new vehicle . As for pumping gas with vehicle running , it's about how the car could backfire causiing a spark to ignite the fumes that are around the pumps . Especially in winter when air is denser and lower to the ground . KABOOM ! Kiss your ( I ) goodbye . Talked to several cashiers of a convenience store and they shut off pumps if they happen to see someone pumping gas with vehicle running . Said " don't want to die in possble explosion " . Another worker at other store said " gave up trying to tell people to shut off engines " , this was due to them getting nasty / offensive . Last , what others do contributes to higher gas prices for all .

got to think how many larger vehicle owners maxed out their credit cards with gas charges during the high prices of fuel . We have several relatives who did so and they're paying higher interest rates due to late payments . This also contributes to those who have good credit . Thanks to all the late payments or non payment of their debts . Here's a example : http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch?id=4942575n . What comes around goes around . ;- )
