Some of these rear main kits include a separate, small black o-ring. Anyone know what it's supposed to be for?

It does not appear to fit the rear bearing cap/oil pump interface or anywhere else I can find.

One search result called it a shifter shaft o-ring, which doesn't make much sense. I'm thinking maybe it was used for the 3.9 V6 or other applications?

Mahle includes in this in JV1607 but Fel-Pro does not.

It could be a shift shaft o ring if you need to pop the linkage off in order to get enough “dangle” to the trans to get the oil pan out. It’s a stretch of a guess, but since you said it’s described as that, it’s a possibility.

My first thought was oil pickup but you said no.

Possibly oil dipstick tube? But it seems too big for that.

Yeah thanks for brainstorming. I had all the same thoughts. Couldn't find anywhere it would go on the pump pickup. I also considered dipstick tube but you don't need to touch it for this job.

The one time I found it described as a shifter o-ring was a different, random import brand. I'm skeptical the description was even correct -- it almost felt like ESL (English as a second language). I've been unable to duplicate the search terms (don't remember) to find that exact result again, but no matter.

Anyway it's back together, has oil pressure and isn't leaking.....sooooo..... YAY! ;)
