I was wanting to switch to the 5w20motorcraft instead of the 5w30 motorcraft ive been using. Im getting close to 100k and i bought the truck with 60k and have no idea what someone put in it before me. Do I have to do anything to switch to synthetic or do I just change the oil?

No, you don't have to do anything. Motorcraft 5w20 is a group III blend. It will not have any negative effects in your engine......that relate to the base stock used.

I bought 10w30 to put in this oil change but people have been telling me to stick with the 5w30. With 100k miles should i go thicker?

My '96 Contour with the V6 2.5L engine has over 100,000 miles on it and I used Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 in it for the last oil change (prior to starting the Auto-RX treatment).

Ford now recommends 5W-20 for this engine, they recommended 5W-30 when it first came out.

I will probably use either a 10W-30 or the Rotella 5W-40 in summer, and I will use a 5W-30 in winter.

Your first synthetic use should be drained without extending it. If you are using 3000 mile changes with dino you will change the first batch of synth at 5000 miles or 6 months. After that you will be able to go 1 year 7500 miles between intervals. You can extend the mileage with a uoa but will still need to change at 1 year. Vehicles that are hard on oil will still need the 6 month, 7500 mile change with synth.

The above only applies to 100% synthetics not blends.

ODO 85500 Miles.
