I usually open filters, but this is one of the few I couldn't find any good pictures or dissections of so I thought I would share.

The filter in question is a Hastings Premium that I got on sale for $1, I wanted to dissect it to calm my curiosity... and it appeared the filters had sat there for at least 3 years untouched so I was skeptical due to age/price.

The filter was very well constructed and I was quiet impressed, they had about 2 cases of these filters there and needless to say ill be picking up a case of 12.

The filter is of impressive construction, the bypass valve is a spring on the bottom as well. The media is very securely adhered to the metal base plates with glue in a precise non sloppy way. The ends of the media are clamped and glued between metal as well. The media was 70 inches long, 1 3/4 inch high, and had 56 pleats around a interestingly perforated metal center. The media seemed thick but not like the cardboard of a Super-tech I opened, it has a similar look and feel to the media inside the Purolator classic I opened. It also says replaces Puro PL14459, Napa 1334, Wix 51334, and Fram PH6811 above the scan bar of the box.

I have yet to find anything on the filtration rates anywhere after an hr of google... anyone have the info?

I can't ever seem to get any images to [censored] show up here (part of the reason I don't share more of these activities as well).

(Yes I mutilated the filter can a bit to open it, hence the scratches)

Fixed.

Not a real big one. Looks pretty good.

What's the media surface area to compare to the Purolator 14459, which only has 85~90 sq-in.

By my measurements it would be 85 sq-in and I didn't measure the length surgically.

I got a 2nd person to hold the other end of the media and got it totally flat then measured 71.5 inches. That would make it almost 87 sq inches.

Media area basically the same as the 14459. The Hastings looks like a decently built filter. What's the bypass valve look like?

Its just a spring operation on the dome end, an interesting design that worked pretty smoothly when I was pushing on the cap of the filter in the can. The bottom of the filter also has a recess that holds the spring in.

Looks decent, is that a black ADBV I see? I would use the Purolator 14459 in my Honda, but I spring for the Pure1 instead.

Yeah its a nitril adbv, I got a good score on some $3 P1's last year with the rebates but its running low so I am going to go pick up an entire case of these since they are so cheap and of very good quality... I just can't pass it up.
