I needed a new rubber mallet for a project I am working on. HD had no US made, Lowes had this nice selection. But it’s choices overload. What’s the dofference and why would you pick one over the other? I get the two on the left are different weights, but what about the grey vs black on the right? And for the two on the left, why all the different materials for the striking faces?

The grey one says non marring maybe it’s a little bit different rubber or something. Depends on the use but I’d say for most things the traditional black would work fine. I’ve noticed Walmart has a black and white one as one hammer one side is non marring the other is so I guess that’s the main difference here too.

Yes, I purposely left out dead blows, which are yet another type of hammer, imo distinct from rubber and metal hammers. There's overlap in use with all kinds obviously

I guess the black leaves a mark. The Vaughan website should have all the technical details. Nice to see Lowe’s carrying those in stock. HD sells Vaughan online. In fact I have to return one, bad workmanship, really bad. They had filled cracks in the handle head where the wedges are with wood putty, and some putty was even on the hammer metal. The grinding on the head was beyond amateur, and the magnet for the nail was off to the side from where it should be. The Taiwan made Milwaukee they had was perfectly made and on sale for nearly half off. So I get that one instead.
