Difference between specs

Does someone know the difference between:

MB 228.51 and MB 228.31?

Can I use a 228.31 in an engine who is prescribed for 228.51?

It looks like 228.51 is better than 228.31 in general... More wear protection, piston deposits.

Generally MB fluids are backwards compatible, but not the other way around.
