Hello,

I am wondering if there is an HDEO with similar cleaning qualities to the Valvoline R&P.

Thanks

I have a 96 Ford F350 with the 7.3.

The truck has 350k miles on it. It has typical blow-by for the engine and age.

After reading consistently positive reviews of the Valvoline R&P for car engines, I thought something similar for diesels could be beneficial.

Not really and that's coming from someone that has and still uses HDEO in gas engines and it has done a good job cleaning them slowly and gently to where one oil burner no longer burns and the other has slowed down a ton but still looks to have room for improvement.

However that was with older and more common high detergent HDEO and most new ones have less detergents than before and sometimes less than gas oils. Used a lot of the old rotella T and travelers which were CJ

With the first few oil changes on both there was no change but after that with every oil change the level has one down less and less. VRP looks to be much faster at cleaning than hdeo.

I need a 5-40, 15-40 type of grade for my 7.3.
If you want to try the VRP, you could put a bottle of Schaeffer EP Moly in it and it will bump the viscosity to over a Xw40 grade. Probably closer to an Xw50 as it is very thick but it also has additives and is not just a thickener like Lucas.

Not a bad idea. I just don't know how I would figure out the ratio.

I used Schaeffer Moly EP for the first time this last oil change with Rotella T6 15-40. I was shocked at how thick the Schaeffer is. I used the recommended 3 pints of Schaeffer along with the 14 quarts of the T6. I was actually concerned it may have made my oil a little too thick.

You can find a viscosity calculator online pretty easy

Too thick for what?

I feel my HEUI system likes oil a little thinner. Faster starts and sounds smoother earlier. That being said, I've been hesitant to run 10-30 due to pulling a trailer over passes in the summer heat. Also, my truck likes to mark it's spot so I figure a heavier weight oil may help with that issue.

The consistency of the Sheaffer Moly was like grease having been cut with honey. I will definitely set the jug in hot water before pouring next time.
