Diesel injector heat shield nightmare

Well I spent a lot of time tonight working to clean off the piston. Magnets, vacuum contraptions made from straws, etc.

I got it clean enough that there was no sign of mess in there. I don’t know how much metal could have fallen in. I also noticed that hard carbon deposits also would stick to the magnet for whatever reason, I guess because they were oily.

There were some flakes that I tracked, but eventually all were vacuumed out.

I’m kind of concerned with the threads on the slide hammer.

But liberal oiling and working them back and forth a few times got good seating.

It doesn’t help that the threads in these prechambers are at an angle.

It hammered back in easily. Once the glow plug hole lined up I could install the splined retaining socket.

Here’s to hoping it all can get put back together tomorrow after work.
