The diesel prices are retail. Fleets pay considerably less, with discount cards. For instance, with a fleet card, diesel in Austin, TX is about $3.35, El Paso, TX is $3.40, and Tuscon, AZ is $3.70.

Mostly that's because the fleet price has no tax. Fleets don't pay a fuel tax at the pump. They file them later based on the total fuel bought portioned out by the percent of miles the truck was driven in each state.

Otherwise everyone would fill up in a low tax state before driving across a high tax state, and the high tax state wouldn't get any revenue.

Not sure what state your in but most states charge a fuel tax. Where the discount comes from is contracts to buy in bulk & fleets can meet that criteria.

If you look at the zones on the graph you can see the lower tax states have cheaper fuel so of course people are going to & do fill up in lower tax states. Just look at California as an example. Are you going to fill up in Nevada first where it's cheaper or are you going to fill up once you cross into California & pay more.

IMO, this is not the main reason Fleet pay cheaper prices, they get volume discounts. I have a Fleet card for my Cummins Ram and use it to fill up. My local Speedway has fuel at the pump for $4089/gallon. If I use my Fleet card my price is $3.460/gallon.

There are also apps like Mudflap that can save diesel drivers money.

The Speedway fleet discount is in tiers up to 5 cents per gallon based on the number of gallons purchased in a month. This is a rebate at the end of the month.

The immediate 50 cents off the pump price is because they ring it up as tax-exempt.

If you download the open roads app you will see what I’m talking about. It’s not taxes man! The discounts are at multiple stations. I used speedway as the example.

The only time I've heard of tax exempt for on road fuel would be the government buying it.

Are you talking about off road fuel?

One of my favorite Diesel fleet cards, that anyone can get, is called Open Roads.

No, this is incorrect. Even if you use a fuel card the station always charges the full state and federal taxes where the purchase is made. Taxes and refunds due are reconciled quarterly under IFTA rules. Every state gets their tax due no matter where the fuel is purchased.

The good fleet cards have very substantial discounts compared to retail.
