Did a Stupid Thing

OK

1. Removed all the engine shrouding
2. Cleaned off the oily areas
3. Oil filter was tight and no sign of any problem with gasket or mating surface.
4. Crankcase bolts were tight.
5. Changed the oil and filter.

Started it. (Gee, it starts and runs great!) Within seconds, fresh new oil starts appearing in the area below. Seems to run down from the area where the motor bolts to the frame, but I can't see the source.

Briggs twins were notorious for the pan gasket leaking right there. Not to bad a job, remove the engine, remove oil pan, put new gasket on.

Take that tin cover off and I bet it's leaking under it.

Thanks. That makes sense. Nevertheless, I decided to replace the mower and my offer for free pick up still stands. If there isn't a BITOG'er nearby that wants it, I'll try offering it locally.
Appreciate all the responses.
