OK, you can get an oil that is C3, Dexos2 and VW502. Here is one from Castrol

Quote
Castrol - MAGNATEC STOP-START 5W-30 C3

ACEA C3
API SN/CF
BMW Longlife-04
dexos2
MB-Approval 229.31/ 229.51
Renault RN0700 / RN0710
VW 502 00/ 505 00

It's a 5W30, I have seen Dexos2 oils that are 5W40.
Not sure about 0W40.

VW502 allows mid and full-saps.
Generally, mid-saps is simply not a watered down version of a full-saps oil. There are generally additive(s) which will not show in a typical VOA, UOA in mid-saps oils
which aren't present in full-saps oils as full-saps oils don't need them as they rely on a higher dose of old school additives.

VW 50200/50500 is based on A3B4.
VW 50200/50501 is based on C3.

Yup. I know there are (several) 5W40s. I was just wondering why not for a 0W40.

OP, just a guess here, but do the Dexos rules allow a 0W40 viscosity grade for D2 ?

I know they don't allow a 10W30 grade for D1, even though it could be made to meet their other requirements.

General quality specs like Euro ACEA or American API can mostly be applied to any oil grade. But many OEM specs also require a certain viscosity grade.

Mobil 1 ESP 0w-40 is Dexos 2.

Yay !! There you go.

Do you know if it's VW502 ? (Sorry can't look it up where I am now)

Nope, only approval it carries at the moment is Dexos. Perhaps it will get more later?

Thank mate, yeah I just found it myself, interesting the M1 ESP 0W40 is Dexos2, MB 229.51, ACEA C3 and API SM/CF.
So SM on the M1 webpage, is that a typo ?

KV100 = 13.2 cSt, TBN = 7.8, Phos = 800 ppm, SA = 0.8%, HTHS = 3.79 cP, FP (D92) = 234C

Yeah, it's the new "vette" oil from what I understand. I don't think the API classification is overly relevant, given the target audience of the product

Yes it's ACEA C3, so mid-SAPS

Yep, if it's the right oil for the job, that's all you need.

We have the same thing here, some oils only carry what they need, e.g.
Valvoline SynPower XL-III 5W30 Full Synthetic
ACEA C3, MB 229.51, BMW LL-04, Porsche C30, VW 504.00/507.00 (It has no API spec)
KV100 = 11.7 cSt, TBN = 6.7, FP (D92) = 232C, PP = -45C

Thanks for the posts SR5.

I did a run of this Mobil 1 ESP Formula 0W-40 for our Golf R knowing that its only official builder approval was dexos2 (but with the R "needing" a minimum of the 502).
