I need some thoughts on Dexcool from you guys with more experience in it & its problems than I have. Here's the situation -
I've just acquired a very low mileage 1999 Pontiac Trans Am with the LS1 all aluminum 350ci engine.

This car has spent its entire life mostly sitting in a collection of cars. It has less the 4,000 miles on it, and other than a battery and a few oil changes, is just the way it rolled off the assembly line.

Complete fluid change is my first order of business, which brings me to the Dexcool question.
My gut says to dump the Dex and go green ... but I'm just not sure. Knowing of all the dex related problems in the 3.4, 3.8L LIM gastkets, etc. causes me concern.

Then again, maybe the dex is not a problem in this application? Any thought?

Cool find. Flush out the Dexcool completely and install the green.

How did you get your hands on such a mint vehicle?

I'd try to find Peak Global full strength so that you get EL without the water pump seal hurting silicates and gasket eating 2-EHA. If I couldn't find it I'd go with G-05 or even Honda or Toyota LL. That's too nice of a car to throw just any A/F into.

Dexcool has worked great in my 1998 LS1 Corvette. I have drained and refilled it twice (every 5 years), it was clean.

Basically, air leaks in your coolant system causes Dexcool problems. If your coolant is not muddy or brown, you are okay.

You can use Prestone ALL MAKES ALL MODELS, it is a yellow Dexcool clone.

the 99 ls1 has a dry intake manifold. dexcool will not effect the gaskets in it. i would go with dexcool or equal and change every 2 years. mike
