Denso oil filters wildly varying quality with COO

Bringing back this thread from the dead. Yes, this Toyota OEM oil filter sold in Finland seems to be the made-in China Toyota/Denso 90915-YZZJ1, a replacement for the made-in-Taiwan Toyota/Denso 90915-YZZF2 sold in USA. This made-in-China Toyota/Denso oil filter came the second from the top in this Finnish magazine's tests. As you see, quality of the Toyota OEM oil filters greatly vary, as they are manufactured in several different countries, including Japan, Thailand, China, and USA. Made-in-Thailand Toyota/Denso 90915-YZZF2 came by far at the very bottom in the tests conducted for Amsoil, showing how different the quality of the Toyota/Denso oil filters could be according to the country of the origin. Years ago Toyota OEM oil filter 90915-10001 (made in either Thailand or Japan for this part number) came the second from the bottom in some other Finnish magazine's tests. Are we talking about the can filter or cartridge filter? Toyota has been moving more and more towards the cartridge although there are a lot of them still on the road using the can filter. We have to be mindful of the age of the study and what kind of filter are we talking about.

Toyota oil-filter cartridges sold in USA are entirely identical to the cores of the canister type Toyota oil filters sold in USA, and, yes, they are both made in Thailand. Therefore, this discussion applies equally well to the canister- and cartridge-type Toyota oil filters. You can also see the amount of gunk collected by the high-efficiency Purolator PureONE but since the owner exceeded its mileage rating, it reached its capacity and collapsed. Thailand-made oil-filter cartridges will hardly collect any dirt during the same OCI and look clean, making naïve people think that it's doing a better job. Fram Ultra, Wix XP, Mobil 1 EP, etc. oil filters can allow longer OCIs without compromising the efficiency.

Wouldn't the bypass valve prevent that the collapsing of the filter ?
 
The premise of this thread is coming from a 2011 study and thread that Gokhan resurrected yesterday. All this data is way too old to be relevant today. The study in the old thread was paid for by Amsoil and that throws a shadow on the results as well. Any study will have to be completely third party with no company involvement. I also find it hard to believe that Denso produces quality automotive parts including oil filters yet their Thailand filters are chosen as suspect. Looking at the Denso global website, https://www.denso.com/global/en/ their oil filters are manufactured in various locations around the world.
 
Yes, you would think bypass valve would prevent such problems. It could also be installation errors by the owner, such as overtorquing or putting the O-ring in the wrong groove.

??? the housings bottom out on a machined step...torque won't take it any farther. O'ring similarly cant change the installed overall length. Having had a Nissan for 13 years with a cartridge filter, it appears to me that the "high quality" media that has collapsed is do to the rubberish end caps leaving too much axial stress on the filter... Both of your possibilities, placed on top of the "exceeded it's capacity and collapsed" are yet more of your wild arsed statements of fact with no actual backing.

they make the best oil in the world, for the best engines in the world, but their filters are rubbish...is my takeaway.
 
Toyota obviously placed oil flow over filtration as their biggest priority in designing that filter.

Funny this is brought up. RA sells Denso filters for my truck for just over $3. I would have bought one (for cutting open) if the other stuff I was purchasing was coming from the same warehouse.

I would phrase it such that Toyota puts the oil-filter life first over efficiency. But then the efficiency of their oil filters wildly vary according to COO.

Yawn. Somehow I'm still doing OK with the OEM filters on my Sienna and ECHO. Why do I have such a hard time getting worked up over this topic? Should I be more concerned?
 
FWIW, my Accord was always serviced using the OEM Honda filters with also low efficiency ratings at 7-9k intervals up until 573k or so. Perhaps the efficiency isn't that necessary in a good engine?

It is so obvious the standard filter offers flow over filtration, that they offer a whole line of TRD racing oil filters for high flow requirements.

I guess the Framboys are tired of us ignoring them when they bash Puro so they are after Denso instead.
