From what I understand the SL is for 2001 vehicles and newer while the SJ is for 2001 and older...I use both because the newest vehicle I have is a 2001 Jeep so it's a non-issue for me...till the SJ runs out

Thanks Greaser,
I am curious which has a better, more rubust additive package. My application is for a 2000 Subaru.

Someone did a test on the SJ 5W-40 formula in the VOA section of this board but I don't recall a test on the SL formula..I'd go with the SL due to the fact that the SL will be available only soon.

Additive package of both grades far exceeds a need of gas engines and the majority of passanger car diesels. Not sure, but if to be based on PDS its SJ stuff could have better base oil. The only problem we never know exactly when this or that manufacturer changes its oil formulation. Quite often it happens before the oil is qualified for a new quality level.
