Doing a little research tonight, and came across this on the Mobil site:

"Due to its unique formulation, Delvac 1300 Super 15w-40 also meets the more demanding SAE 10w cold temperature pumping requirements."

Does this basically mean this oil could also qualify as a 10w-40?

Thanks,

Justin.

It's certainly possible. Many 15w40s are in fact 10w40s, but because of marketing they are labelled 15w40. Schaeffer Supreme 15w40 could qualify as a 10w40 for instance. But 15w40 is a popular weight for fleet oils and for the farming industry.

Alright...maybe I'm overlooking something easy here, but how can an oil qualify for both categories? Wouldn't it be in one or the other?

Also, is there some reason why HDMO's are formulated as 10w-40's, not 15w-40's??

Thanks,

Justin.

Patman,
If there was such a thing, the #700 would qualify as an 8W-40!

Justin,
A company can always label their products as exceeding a less demanding spec. 15W-40 oil has a reputation as robust, broad shouldered, tough stuff. 10W-40 has a reputation as an oil with problems, although most folks never knew or don't remember the problems, and the problems were with previous formulations years back--I'm not sure the concerns are still valid. Anyway, oil labeled as 15W-40 will likely sell better to diesel engine owners, and if it allows the engine to crank and start easily because it actually flows better when really cold, so much the better.

Just looking at the specs, the pour point of Delvac 1300 15W40 is minus 33 degrees C, which is in the area of a 10W oil. However, the viscosity at 40 degrees C is 117 cSt which seems too high for a 10W40 oil. Any comments from the experts?
