Delo 400 and 7.3 Powerstrokes

Hi,
I think I read somewhere that Delo 400 was preferred for 7.3 PowerStrokes because of the Moly additive. Something to do with the HPOP and injectors or something. Anyone have any fact-based info on this? I'm sure other brands are fine also. Costco has a very good price on Delo here.

The 7.3L (IH T444E) PSD uses a CAT designed HEUI fuel injector. It uses high pressure engine oil (up to 3500 PSI) to fire the injectors. Both the Delo 400 and Shaeffer's have proven to be great PSD oils as they do not foam easily. Keeping the oil level full on the dipstick is also very important. Due to the rexroth type HP oil pump, the PSD also tend to be hard on oil due to the high shear loads(partly contributing to foaming).

I personally run Delo 400 and have had great results in 29 differant PSD (all 7.3, IDI, IDI Turbo and 7.3 PSD) with this oil. I have also have run Shaeffer's with equally impressive results and will be switching to Shaeffer's again as I have found a good local distributor (at least as soon as my stock pile of 400 runs out).

The costco Delo 400 will serve you well when changed at appropriate intervals, IMO.

I would also recommend Delo, as it is a top notch dino HDEO oil. As far as a synthetic or semi-syn, get the Schaeffer's Supreme 7000 (semi syn) or the Supreme 9000 (fully syn). Either Schaeffer's product will give you outstanding results.

Any CH-4, CI-4, or CI-4+ diesel engine oil will work very well in your engine. All have an adequate amount of antifoamant for proper operation of the fuel injection system. The injection system uses engine oil as a hydraulic oil to operate the injectors. Shell, Chevron, Pennzoil, Cenex, you name it. They will work well.

All that said, Chevron Delo 400 is one of the better oils, and I'm not sure if the current version has any moly or not. I like Schaeffer oils very much, and feel that those would give you superb service, especially in winter.
