Same thing with my 2004 2.4l Taco. The first time I changed the oil, I put in what the book said to put in (5.8qts). I drove to work the next day and had to drain out 1 qt to get to the full mark. I spoke with the dealer and was told that they actually only put 4.5qts in a 4cyl. Anyway, long story is I got the SAME response from Toyota concerning the proper fill. All the mfg does is change the length of the dipstick to alter the proper fill level.

Same thing with my 04' Mazda6. Manual states 6 qts., and i put in 5 and about 1/2 going into the filter when changing the oil. Checked the oil after also letting it drain awhile, and it's seems to be over about 1/4 in. Maybe some of it is hidden somewhere in the block. Who knows.
I noticed the same, Eric. I drained the oil on my old Altima and it said to refill with 4 quarts, and it was overfilled by 1/4 an inch. I let it drain for 2 hours, too! It wasn't even dripping anymore.
ive learned this past winter to just change it myself as soon as the real cold comes and because i drive alot to wait till a friend has an open garage when its really cold. this winter i went what i thought was the easy way out, i had my oil changed at a quick lube and it was close to a quart overfilled, good thing i checked it when i left the shop after it sat a few mins while i payed. they drained the quart and gave me a card for a free change, not gonna use that. a few months and 500miles later i take it to an national tire and battery shop to have the oil changed again, this time it was filled right but after i was home for a bit and went back out i had oil drips on the ground. i take a look under and its driping from the drain plug i get under there and the plugs only had tight. never again will i have a shop change my oil i dont care how lazy or cold i feel
The dealership where I bought my car from advocates overfilling oil but it goes further, they have the overfilled charts hanged right there, prominently, in the lube bay itself. It's as if they need the oil monkeys to be reminded about how much to overfill. I believe they wanted to put like 4.7 or 4.8 in a 4.5 capacity sump.
yes, to compensate for a brand new empty oil filter, I'd bet.
My owners manual simply states that my engine takes 5.0 qts/4.7 litres including the oil filter.

Most guys working at the JL here in my little town refer to themselves as lube monkeys....I wouldnt take it so PC man.
How about 'lube tech'or 'oil changer' anything that does not the term...monkey? When i worked at jiffy lube, i found out you cannot have speed and quality. we were having cars in and out of there in like 5 minutes, sometimes less, we would have customers accuse us of not performing work because we were so quick...so yea, mistakes happend.
I'll be honest with you, Jiffy lube is probably one of the worse places you can take your car. When i worked there a few months ago, I saw a side of Jiffy lube, and life that 17 years had not yet taught me. Jiffy Lube is an abuser. If Jiffy lube was the name of a man, he would be a wife beater. ALL the employees at Jiffy lube were ppl that had mistakes in there life. Felonies, etc. Now, it's nice that theres a place these ppl can get jobs, BUT, jiffy lube does nothing short of ABUSE to them. They pay them #@$%! wages, 6.00 an hour, for the type of work we indured, in a bay, working under hot exhaust all day in VERY hazardous conditions (bay floors are slippery all the time, you fell atleast once a day) and then corporate treated us like little children, they knew everyone working there had there back against the wall.
How this affects you.
What type of work are you going to get paid by some guy whose getting paid only 6 dollars an hour?
Take into account, Jiffy lube does not drug test employees, and will hire anyone with any background short of murder. JL employees smoke more p@t in one day than i ever have from middle school to 11th grade. If there were no customers, there is smoking.
These ppl than drive your car into a bay.
THEN we are pressured to not pressure the customer, but to let the customer decide what they want, BUT they contradict themselves, and the manager gets fired from his great paying 9.75 hr. job (for managing the WHOLE store) if we don't sell enough. we couldn't make budjet on just oil changes.
The number of 'rear diffrential' services we sold to FWD was unbelievable.
JL makes me Glad i have a clean record, JL used me, but i used them, as i now have 'experience working with my hands' when i apply to go to school for Audi.
Long story short, there not grease monkeys, there just ppl forced by their circumstances, to do work that is below their capabilities. JL had alot of wasted talent. These ppl could actually do well too if it wasn't for Managment..and if they actually got paid anything. I don't see how anyone could make ends meet working at jiffy lube.
