I can assure you that it is (a) very real, and (b) I have no hatred for the Prius. My in-laws have one, I've driven it and can understand why so many people like it. I live in Madison, WI - a decidedly left leaning town with more Prius per capita than probably 99% of the US. You don't go anywhere in this town without seeing several. My work parking lot is no exception.
