Are the Crosstreks (model year 2013-present) direct injection, port injection, something else, or a mixture of both? I've read direct, I've read port, I've read mostly direct but the port is for spraying some fuel on the valves to clean them since DI doesn't do that.

Instead of Googling and finding a reputable site to answer (Googling I've found all of these answers on forums) I figured I'd try BITOG. I'm hoping at least 10 people reply with 3 or more answers. This way it can be a mystery for longer!

It has the FB20
at this time both the fb20 and fb25 are port injection

They are supposed to get direct injection soon.. they have been saying that since 2012.

The FA20DIT is direct injection and turbocharged

Then of course there are other engines such as the fa20 from the brz.

Odd. A ton of sites said it was direct. Haha! Just shows the Internet isn't always as smart as we'd believe...I wanted to know for oil change intervals. I believe DI is tough on oil in many cases? Now I won't change at 5k. I'll push it a bit longer.

I'd defer to cars101.com - they are very good with regard to Subaru specs.

Sequential multi-port fuel injection is what they say.

The Internet is smart if you are smart and know where to look. You should have gone directly to the source to the Subaru website. The Crosstrek section under Specs > Mechanical > Engine shows it to have Sequential Multiport injection.

Yeah, I think on newer it's maybe even 5k. Manual says 7500 but I've seen a lot of Subaru changed that to 6000. Some say it's due to consumption issues? Severe is either 3000 or 3750. Seems really short to me. But they probably want them to last and keep positive brand recognition about reliability.

That was actually a reason I started looking. Interval requiring synthetic was so short on their TSB that was posted somewhere on a forum.

That site still is a bit confusing on 2013 models. The do indicate that turbos require the synthetic, but then imply some owner's manuals wanted it for N/A's as well. They do call out all models with a turbo as under 'severe' use.

I'd get NAPA's synthetic on sale or SuperTech and call it a day (If it's N/A). Meets warranty req's. Otherwise, maybe do some oil analysis to find a good longer lasting oil.

I had a 2014 XV Crosstrek 5spd. Definitely not DI. Nice little engine the FB20 is, but IMO, the XV is better suited for the 2.5. From what I understand the engines are identical aside from the 2.5L having a longer stroke.

I went Mobil 1 0w20 instead of Quaker State Ultimate Durability or Super Tech with the $12 rebate for Mobil 1. The owner's manual says 0W20, use synthetic, or 5w30 or 5w40 if 0w20 isn't available. But change to 0w20 on your next oil change. What??? Sounds like, my thoughts most of the time, doesn't really matter. Use anything from 0w20-5w40 and anything in between without fear.
