Cross Reference Spark Plug Issues?

Has anyone ever used a spark plug that checked out OK on the spark plug cross reference sheet, but did not perform the same as the original?

I ask because my zero turn mower is a John Deere, with a Kohler motor, with a Champion spark plug.

The nearest local John Deere dealer wants $8 per plug (I need 2) for a Champion plug wrapped in John Deere packaging, while O'Reilly's has a cross referenced Autolite plug for $2.80

FYI, the spark plug is a Champion XC12YC cross referenced with an Autolite 3924

Thanks for your input

The internet is awash with stories describing trouble using cross-reference spark plugs.

I have personally never experienced trouble, even when using "gimmick" plugs in engines never designed for them. As I have gotten older though, the desire to experiment has dropped off. In this age counterfeits and general junk I want parts that work properly and fit correctly so I buy all but performance parts straight from the dealer counter.
