Crane Cam Break-in Concentrate Holy ZDDP!!

Just got back a VOA from Blackstone on this product:
Chromium 5
Lead 5
Moly 18
Potassium 4
Boron 14
Silicon 3
Sodium 437
Phos 693500
Zinc 148600
All other elements are O.

SUS Visc. @210F 107.5
Flashpoint 395F

The zinc and Phos. are not a misprint. Viscosity seems to be in the 50W range.
Attn. Experts: Any ideas on how much to add per qt of oil?

couple ounces I use a "pak" that is about 21,000 ppm ZN.

Or is it meant to just slobber all over cam if so that would be a couple ounces and may be all needed.

Ask Tall Paul he uses stuff like this.

Wow, I mean, wow. Wow. I wouldn't use more than something like half an ounce per quart. Heck, even that might be too much.
 
Well you have to bear in mind that the initial oil and filter on a rebuild or cam swap should be drained out after 20 minute run in. So most os that will not be the engine very long. The first 20 minutes of an engines life RPM's should not drop below 2000 and it should be allowed to run at 2000 RPM's for 20 solid minutes before shut down. Then you are susposed to drain the oil and change the filter. Run the engine for another 500 miles and change the oil again. Most people fail to do theinitial 20 minute run in properly and this is a major cause of cam failures. The truly said thing is that all of your HOT ROD magazines run at least 3-4 engine build up stories a year and they always mention the 20 minute run in and yet so many neglect it. I also have found that many people do not use a proper EP lube for assembly, fail to prime the engine and the oil pump and many fail to follow proper tightening seq. and torq. spec.!!!!! These are all engine killers!
 
70% P? 15% Zn? That doesn't leave much room for the hydrocarbons (the DD in ZDDP), much less any carrier oil. Looks fishy, but Blackstone probably double checks anything out of the ordinary like this.

yeah the lab is WAY off. Unless it has SOLID dispersed ZN metal in it Phos ester base??

Common primary ZDDP used in motor oil is.

PHOSPHORUS 10.00 %wt
SULFUR 21.00 %wt
ZINC 11.05 %wt

So at most 100,000 ppm Zn I did not pay attention before.

If the ZDDP is that high then yes 2K-3K could cause pitting. Even I have been lectured on many an occasion about ZDDP pitting when I mention I am useing Power Service Diesel Lube Extender. Mind you my PSDLE is not even close to being as concentrated as the breakin lube you describe!

For an alternative break in method worth reading check out motuneusa. I am not saying that his methods are right or wrong just that they are worth reading.I used his method on my 2003 Camry and it does not burn a drop of oil and has power to spare. It also has turned in some nice used oil analysis!!
 
I forgot to mention that I normaly use a moly EP grease for cam swaps and engine assembly and I have never had a problem!I once tried experimenting with clorinated parafins mixed in with the moly EP grease but I never saw any difference so I stoped doing it. I use moly EP grease on everything when I am assemblying an engine.You only get one chance at a long engine life. Nothing kills your enthasium faster then shearing an oil pump drive at startup becasue you failed to lube and prime the whole system.
 
I'd ask blackstone to re-run it. If you wanted to add 500ppm Zn you would only add 0.1 oz/qt, IF the analysis was correct.
 
If it really had 148,600 ppm zinc, one ounce per crankcase full would be enough. Figure 1000 ppm for SL oil, so 147,600 / 160 oz = 922 ppm boost for a finished mix of about 1900 ppm. That's pretty high. I am testing a slightly stronger mix in my F150 right now. Started in April and will get a 5 or 6 K UOA around December.

JB: The breakin writeup on mototuneusa.com is very interesting and I would love to try it, but never buy new vehicles or get replacement engines. Besides most new vehicles already have 20 or 30 miles on them and so are beyond the breaking period. A co-worker who once worked for Ford said the guys run them hard right off the line, at least at the plant he was at. Sounds like a good thing. Wish I could get that job at the Mustang plant.
 
I was only planning on using about 4 oz in a 9 qt sump (older 427 Ford). Crane recommended using the entire 8 oz bottle for up to 6 qts of oil but that seems like too much given the VOA. The guy at Crane was a complete a**hole when i asked him how much Zn and Phos was in his product or if i could get some kind of data sheet on it.
