Its a 7.8 hp single cyl. Just started not running right. Starts fine on first pull but will only stay running with the choke 3/4 on. Turn the choke off and it dies. Carb cleaning? or ? .. thanks!
Has a blocked main jet.
It's ready for cleaning and a kit.
May want to also check for proper fuel flow from the tank to the carb, should be peeing with a steady stream.
That would be a secondary issue though.
It has a clogged main jet.
Plugged jet. Remove the bowl from the carbeurator, and clean out the jet with carb/choke/TB cleaner. Also clean dirt out of the bowl. That should fix it. At least it has with my B&S Lawnmower the past 3 times it's done it.
I just cleaned the carb on my neighbors lawn mower this morning. It would run wide open but wouldn't idle. I took the carburetor apart and cleaned everything out. She's purring like a kitty now.
I am a strong proponent of Sta-bil fuel stabilizer and fuel filters. Cheap and easy,,

That's a good engine. A Briggs Vanguard I believe. About the only issues you hear with them are carb related. Like 660mag says, main jet has some crud in it. Has is been sitting with fuel in it?

Yes. its been sitting since last November... and with fuel. going to try some carb cleaner first and see if it helps then clean the main jet. thanks
If you can stuff a little red straw in the carb cleaner can output, it helps increase the pressure up the main jet. Sometimes you can just pull the carb bowl and spray up the jet, no need to disassemble further with the risks of galling things up.
