I will be selling a generator for my sister that has sat in her outdoor shed for 3.5 years. She never added oil or gas to it. The shed has high humidity for the better part of the year. She lives in Seattle. It's a new generator that has never ran.

So I'm thinking of adding oil to the engine and flipping the generator around once or twice, and add some MMO into the spark plug hole, and to the gas.

Any other thoughts are appreciated.

Cast iron liner, or not? If it's not an iron liner, then I'm not sure I'd worry much about it.

Do you want max $$$ for it, or just to move it? If to just move, I wouldn't touch it--let the prospective buyer deal with it. Actually, if you want max $$$ don't do anything--you might find it's seized or low compression or heck was built wrong and should have been returned as non-working.

Is it still in its box? They smear cosmolene on the metal stuff which might help with humidity. Start it once and it'll burn off the muffler.

Obviously the buyer is going to want to run it. So I would put some oil in it. Add some oil to the spark plug hole. (small amount) and then fill up with gas and see if it runs I bet it will.

If it's new and never been run then you should be alright with just filling it with oil and fuel, then firing it up.

I had a Subaru Robin engine on a power washer that I stored new (in box) for a couple years in an unheated outbuilding. When I finally got it out and started using it, after filling it with oil and fuel it fired on the second pull and ran without an issue.

put a few oz of MMO down the plug hole, let it sit over night. Next morning spin the engine over a few times with the plug out. Check or change the oil and use fresh gas.
