If I see a Jeep (1998) and the ad says: 1. Has a small exhaust leak, and front end needs something done... not shocks, but like bushing or bearings? I'm not a mechanic, but it drives fine... just needs some TLC, or a handy person to make it a long term driver then what could I maybe be looking at to fix what it needs on the front end?

A particular Jeep has a rebuilt trans, so I may go with it.

Sounds like "death wobble".

He probably got it checked out and a $1500 estimate for a whole new front end and alignment.

Actually, front end work on coil sprung Jeeps isn't too bad, if you do it yourself. You'd be looking at a few hundred bucks.

Not really sure what you expect with heavily used $1500 vehicles.

You should expect to throw $1500+ into it to make it roadworthy.

when it comes to jeeps, the question isnt how much will it take to fix it, its how much money do you have?

I actually just bought my son a '98 4.0 Cherokee-KEEP LOOKING until you find a decent one, and be prepared to pay a little more up front. Or you will end up with a pain in the neck vehicle that costs WAY more to fix than you paid for it, & what it's worth. I seriously looked at FIFTEEN XJs, ranging from $800-$4500, before I found one worth buying!

If you don't start beating on them, Wranglers and Cherokees are some of the most reliable vehicles I've ever driven.
