I stumbled across this cool Shell Rotella site which provides 77 Q&A topics on motor oils. A sampling:

#22. "The term 'break-in oil' is a relic from the old days...With all the advances in parts metallurgy and machining techniques, manufacturers can break in their engines with fully formulated, off-the-shelf engine oil."

#24. "You should also be aware that engines typically go through a period of adjustment when making the transition from one oil to another. Because brands are formulated with different additives, a new brand may act differently than the old one at first. Increased oil consumption and leaking seals are common adjustment problems."

# 73. "Remarkably, this shearing can sometimes occur within several hundred miles of driving, and cause oil pressure to decrease. Usually the decrease isn’t enough to worry about, especially if you start with high viscosity...Some oil makers hedge viscosity on the high side to cover their oil pressure downside. You pay for that with a little more fuel burn."

#45. "Synthetic transmission and gear oils also enable you to extend the oil change interval up to five times longer than a straight mineral oil."

Yes I liked the site also. Trouble is I emailed them a question and still am waiting for the answer. That was one month ago.

That kind of customer service makes the smaller oil companies like amsoil and synergyn look all the better.

Some good common knowledge at the site, however, I think they need to inform Honda that using a 'break-in oil' in their new cars "is a relic from the old days"

I spoke with the SHELL MAN today. He gave the expected answers like this: Your Formula Shell oil with the GF-3 rating has the formula been changed going to GF-4. No Not that I am aware of it meets GF-4 with the current formula. So they do not intend to make the oil a synthetic blend like others have.No Shell will have synthetic oil and petroleum oil. I found this great news that the .59 oil is good enough to meet the harder gidelines of GF-4 without changing the formula.I wish I had bought more now and I thought it had a weak additive package Too

Does Honda use a specific break in oil? Or are some people drawing conclusions from UOAs?
