In a previous thread ekpolk noted that reg Mobil 1 10W-30 was thinner than it's 5W-30 sibling. While recently scanning the Mobil website I looked at the specs for M-1 10W-30 and M-1 10W-30ep. They are both thinner than their 5W-30 counterparts. I'm confused. Why are they thinner?

SAE30 grade covers a range of viscosities. As long as your product falls into that range, you can call it an Xw-30 weight.
Why did XOM formulate these specific products the way they did? You would have to talk to an XOM engineer to find out.

That the 30wt (or any other "weight" for that matter) covers a range at 100C.
Why? Could have to do with the basestock, the optimum quantity (or desire to add no) VII, etc.
