Confused about OCI's

You might want to read the this thread, it made for lively and interesting discussion.

I'm going to add a time factor.

Dino- 5K or 6 Months, whichever comes first.

Synthetic- I'll say 7500-10k if done within 1 year, and a higher end filter. The 10k would be for higher end synthetic, ie. (in no particluar order) PP, ValSyn and Mobil1 and the 'boutique' (Ams,Sch,RL,RP) oils.

I'd be confident with that plan without doing a UOA, which can get costly if done regularly.

Both times I HAD a coolant leak, there was NOT a single indication other than the UOA (and the teardowns) that showed them...

No low coolant, oil looked fine.

When a coolant leak whips up a milk shake under the cap its really bad. My father always pressure checked his cooling system twice a year long before we knew of UOA's. I started doing that recently, and perhaps will spend the cash for a UOA at some point. After joining Bitog I am beginning to see more and more value to them.

There is a MAJOR value in them IMO.

Catching something BEFORE it trashes the bearings is priceless. Plus seeing how the oil/engine is performing (no MATTER what some members think) is a good thing.

I'd rather know then GUESS.

Take care, Bill

I try to do one per year if the vehicle is in warranty and once I get the engine looking good then one every 12-18 months unless I feel something may be going wrong.

I always get one 3 months before the warranty is running out.

thanks guys. looks like ill be going with a 7k OCI. Another thing first though, this is the first time running synthetic in this car and it doesnt seem like its leaking as much.it leaks through the rear main seal and the oil pan gasket.

Use a 6 month, 6k oci. Change once in the Fall and once in the Spring. PP will probably leak less than M1. Try it without the MMO.

People suggest 7500-10,000k OCI's with a quality full synthetic. But what if you only average 6-7k a year? Should you go 18-24 months just because you havent hite the milage yet? After a long cold winter, and a long hot summer I feel the need to drain and refill again, eventhough its usually only been 3K/6 months...

Stick with it for a bit. If it continues you may consider a high mileage formula to see if the seal swelling agents can contain the condition.

Can you list all the engines you have done this in, and your driving habits? (I believe you, just more for history)

StevieC,
Started using M1 in 1978 in a new Dodge truck.
Also at that time purchased a 77Chevy Nova V8 till it had 120,000 miles on M1.
In 1985 had a brain fade and bought a 81 Plymouth K Car which was junk and only kept it for 3 months.
Traded it in for a new Escort wagon diesel and and between me and my son (he owned it for some time after me) we put 300,000 miles on it.
Also had a 84 Tempo diesel at the same time and put 140,000 miles on before selling it.
In 1990 bought a 90 Tempo gas and put 145,000 miles on it and sold it to a friend who ran the miles up to 256,000 miles before wrecking it.At this time I bought a 91 Ranger which I put 190,000 miles on it, then gave it to my oldest son which he is still driving. 330,000 miles.
After the Tempo I bought the Mercury I have now(215,000 miles) and a year and a half ago purchased the 07 Focus I also have.
In between all this I owned a 2000 Ranger for 2 years when I needed a truck. Just think all the money spent on cars and trucks. All these on various M1 oils and 10,000 mile OCIs.

My driving habits are what I would consider normal. A lot of trips but also a fair amount of city driving. I'm not a hot rodder but do a few WOT passes from time to time.

Some impressive results,

and in a cold climate too. Living on Long Island if I drove as many combined miles as you have I'd probably be driving full time and have no time for anything else. Traffic is the norm around here, unless you travel off peak, and then there's always some kind of road repair going on somewhere

My wife and I are only treveling about 6000 miles/year on each of our vehicles. I've been changing the oil every 6 months/3000 miles.

I've been making my own syn blend(2qts syn & 3qts dino). All oils are the popular names held in high reguard here at BITOG.
I have so many qts of oil(sales/rebates/closeouts) of different name brands that I have to mix them up some in way!
Both vehicles are using the same oil/filter combo(which ever that happens to be at the time.

Wifes Lexus RX-300 V6 oil still looks OK after 6mo/3000mi but, it's suppose to be a sludge monster and I don't want to push it any further.
My Altima 2.5 4 cyl oil looks black after the 6mo/3000mi but it has a timeing chain which I understand adds to the already "hard on motor oil" engine that the 2.5 is. So again, I don't want to push it any further.

Maybe I could take the OCI's out a little further but, for the little that I pay for top quality oil/filters, it's just not worth it IMHO.

There are two of us,wife and I, driving so the miles do add up. One son and his family live in Florida,3-4 trips a down there a year. Also many trips to Maine and Colorado. It all adds up to high mileage cars.

I'm not doubting you, just living where I do, and driving under the conditions I drive under I'd spend half my life behind the wheel. My BIL moved from Long Island to Florida, and drives up to NY half a dozen times a year, his miles are piling up now.

Your success with Mobil 1 is still impressive!

Yes it does. This 4.6 has been the most consistent and reliable engine I have ever owned. I do maintain it well, but it is just a great engine by design it seems to me.

demarpaint,
M1 has worked well for me, but I have friends and family that have had great success with M1 as well. One friend has a 2000 Taurus with 295,000 mile all on M1 5-30. I guy I worked with for years has a 99 Chevy PU with 245,000 on M1 and he abuses his truck something terrable. 15-20,000 OCIs.
