So my partners parents have a '99 Honda CRV. It is approaching 200K KM (120K Miles). It runs excellent and uses/leaks no oil. It has been well maintained and all the regular maintenance done on it. (I had something to do with that...)
So I was installing Sirius Satelite radio for them last weekend, which me and my partner bought them for Christmas... We told them that we would pay for a 1 years worth of service after it was installed.
While installing the radio I noticed a few surface rust spots here/there and I made comment to my future father-inlaw about the spots and that he should look after these. I then made the comment that I thought he had the truck rust proofed every year and that this should be covered under their warranty.
He told me that he didn't have the $$$ to keep rust-proofing it, so he stopped a few years back.
I explained that $100/yr is a small price to pay to protect a vehicle that will most likely run into the 400K KM (240K miles) easy, which will save him a ton of cash in future payments on a new vehicle. (They still have a mortgage)
He said he understood but still couldn't afford it. So I decided to drop the issue and leave him being taxed by the idiot-tax that he is imposing on himself.
So I finish installing the radio etc. and I'm teaching him how to use it, when he poses the question... "How much is this going to cost me after the year?"
I told him the prices and that they had a lifetime plan for $600 CDN to never pay again if he wanted. This is what my and my partner have for our radio's.
He said that he wanted to call Sirius and upgrade to the lifetime plan instead of the monthly plan which we were going to pay for, for 1 year.
So he spent $600 on a lifetime subscription to Sirius, but can't spent $100/yr on rust-proofing to save himself a huge amount of vehicle payments for say the next 5 years? ($30K in total) ???
There are some words I would like to use but they would be censored out... So I will leave it at "no wonder he still has a mortgage at almost 60 years of age!"
