ON, Canada eh?
So my partners parents have a '99 Honda CRV. It is approaching 200K KM (120K Miles). It runs excellent and uses/leaks no oil. It has been well maintained and all the regular maintenance done on it. (I had something to do with that...)

So I was installing Sirius Satelite radio for them last weekend, which me and my partner bought them for Christmas... We told them that we would pay for a 1 years worth of service after it was installed.

While installing the radio I noticed a few surface rust spots here/there and I made comment to my future father-inlaw about the spots and that he should look after these. I then made the comment that I thought he had the truck rust proofed every year and that this should be covered under their warranty.

He told me that he didn't have the $$$ to keep rust-proofing it, so he stopped a few years back.

I explained that $100/yr is a small price to pay to protect a vehicle that will most likely run into the 400K KM (240K miles) easy, which will save him a ton of cash in future payments on a new vehicle. (They still have a mortgage)

He said he understood but still couldn't afford it. So I decided to drop the issue and leave him being taxed by the idiot-tax that he is imposing on himself.

So I finish installing the radio etc. and I'm teaching him how to use it, when he poses the question... "How much is this going to cost me after the year?"

I told him the prices and that they had a lifetime plan for $600 CDN to never pay again if he wanted. This is what my and my partner have for our radio's.

He said that he wanted to call Sirius and upgrade to the lifetime plan instead of the monthly plan which we were going to pay for, for 1 year.

So he spent $600 on a lifetime subscription to Sirius, but can't spent $100/yr on rust-proofing to save himself a huge amount of vehicle payments for say the next 5 years? ($30K in total) ???

There are some words I would like to use but they would be censored out... So I will leave it at "no wonder he still has a mortgage at almost 60 years of age!"

I was kinda being a bit self-serving on this one because it will most likely go to my partner when they are ready to drive something new. I kinda wanted a pristine vehicle for him...

His folks live in a rather "keep up with the Jones's" type area. (Oakville for those who are local)

They drive it until someone makes the comment that it's "old" and then to keep up with everyone else, which they really can't afford to do they go and buy something they shouldn't... They are living in a house they really can't afford either!

Sorry to see that common sense is not so common anymore LOL ! have to admit this is a trend with a lot of people out there. they pinch pennies on some of the things in life but when it comes to their ride they either neglect it or they take it to the dealer and enjoy a wallet that is light in the pocket. I am lucky in that my wife always says " hey all of the time you spend on our cars will ensure us the best chance of keeping them running well for a long time " she understands that a little time and money here and there has kept us from being stuck on the side of the road and having to face a monster repair bill ( knock on wood )

Well, if it's in your best interest you might consider paying for it to be oiled down. Like you say, $100 a year is not much and I'm sure they'd appreciate the favor.

Common sense? What's that?

Agreed, keeping up with the Joneses is a poor idea. Even worse if you are Jones!

Who's lacking the common sense here?

You state they can't afford the house they live in, yet, you buy them a Sirrius Satelite radio and tell them they will have to cough up the monthly payments or $600 after one year?

No offense (really), not only do you seem to be enabling their "self imposed idiot tax", but you seem to be very comfortable passing judgment of their values and lifestyle.

Again, no offense intended. It just seems that your rant is somewhat hypocritical.

"How much is this going to cost me after the year?"

I rust-proof the underneeth our 98 CRV with the ends of odd spray paint cans. I'm shure when the techs put it on the lift, they are curious about the rainbow motif under there.

Even tough I have built-in XM and the wife always had a lil Sportster receiver in her CRV, we quit the service because her commute went from 25 miles down to 2 miles. Our Sat TV offers several good music channels I could copy to CDs if she wanted to listen to the channel types she likes.

Different strokes for different folks.

That reminds me of a BITOG member that bought a brand new Lexus IS 250, but said that a case of Amsoil was "out of his budget"

Well common sense for one is not for another. There is some gray area.

Many people don't mind driving cars around with dents, scratches, loud exhaust, rust etc......Some people do.

Most people don't want to hang onto their cars for that long so why worry about rust and rust proofing.

Maybe he really likes music, talk radio etc and since the radio can be changed out to any vehicle it is worth it.

We all find time for and money for things we want or feel we need.

Why does someone buy a $ 80,000 car when a $ 30,000 will do? Why buy a 800.00 shotgun when a 200.00 shotgun will work. Why buy a new car and take that depreciation hit when you could buy one 1-2 yrs old? Choices, and wants.

I was going to get them a Krown Rust control gift certificate this year for Christmas. Problem is they have to touch up the existing rust or it will still continue to get worse, but just at a slower rate.

His father kept taking the Ford to work because he wanted to listen to the Sirius radio. (Has a long commute), and my partner would be left driving the CRV with regular radio. On top of taking the Ford he would also forget to take out the University parking pass for my partner so he would be left paying $5 to park that day...

We sort of bought them their own radio so they would stop taking the Escort and also so they would stop messing with the presets and costing us money for pay-parking here/there.

You really have to meet his folks to get the picture... Not the sharpest knives in the drawer!

He's an only child... I stand to inherit the house (Hopefully paid off by then) and all the assets (if any) through marriage when they pass on. It's ok!

J/K I'm not that shallow... I'm marrying him for him and don't care about anything else. I'm set anyways, because I started investing at a very early age thanks to my Pap's

Yeah they are broadcast on EchoStar's satellites in space (Dish Network) and they are financially sound other than Echostar is robbing them blind in fees to use their satelite system. If Sirius-XM goes bankrupt then EchoStar has to pay for its own satellites, upkeep and licensing which would bankrupt Dish or so I have read. The two companies just need to come to a happy medium about things. Also Sirius-XM found a private 500 Million dollar investment recently to keep them cash-flow positive for a while. I think they will survive.

I've found that trying to get other people to keep up with what you consider proper maintenance is a fools game. Even just trying to get my girlfriend to WASH her (nice new shiny 08 model) car once every few weeks is a hassle. She won't do it unless I'm with her in the car bugging her about it or take the initiative and do it myself. And I usually have to PAY for the wash too, even though I never drive it. Whatever, she's gonna be [censored] when it starts to rust in a few years, but you reap what you sow.
