New here and trying to learn more about the oil specified for an old Brown and Sharpe 618 Micromaster surface grinder. This machine has hydraulic table and crossfeed cylinders, but also uses the oil to lubricate the sliding ways. Manual recommends "approximately 15 gallons of high lubricity hydraulic oil having a viscosity of 150 S.S.U. at 100°F." 150 SSU (or SUS) seems to be equivalent to ISO 32, reading the specs for the recommended Mobil Vacuoline 1405.
Vacuoline 1405 runs around $180/pail, and the nearest dealer is about an hour away. I'm wondering what the additive differences are between this and easy, cheap Traveller ISO 32 hydraulic oil available close by. It also looks like Mobil Vactra 1, Phillips 66 Multi-way and Gulfway32 are used in similar applications, as a slideway lubricant also suitable for moderate duty hydraulic systems and would probably be better choices than Traveller.
